LPD: Uneventful return to
school for Laval students
Tips for parents and children
CAROLINE GARDNER
To help usher in the school year in a safe
manner, Laval’s police force increased its
presence across the island, according to
LPD spokesperson Constable Marc Morel.
“Not only were our officers on alert in
Laval’s school zones and along bus routes,
but we heightened our surveillance outside
of those areas as well,” he said, noting that
many of the city’s thousands of school children
walk or cycle up to 1.6 km to their
respective institutions. However, the first
day back for the majority of students,
September 2 nd , went very smoothly, he
reported.
Despite the trouble-free nature of this year’s
back-to-school, the LPD encourages parents
to review safety and prevention with their
children. “Tell your children to always
respect crossing guards, and wait for their
signal before crossing the street, and to
always walk on city sidewalks,” he said. In
the case that there is no sidewalk,
the left hand side is
safest, as children will be
walking against traffic. For
cyclists however, the right
hand side is best – along with
a helmet, the LPD urges.
Motorists were not forgotten
in the LPD’s back-to-school
safety tips: with the heightened
police presence, it would
be highly recommended that
drivers carefully obey the law
– not only to protect Laval’s
youngsters but to avoid fines
and demerit points (see table.)
“More than ever, back-toschool
concerns all of us,”
Morel concluded. The Sûreté
du Québec also increased its
presence in scholastic zones
during the back-to-school
period under what they
dubbed “Operation Transpec”;
like the LPD, they had no incidents
to report.
