Pack some good eating
into school lunches
It’s back to school for students and parents
face the recurring issue of packing a lunch
that is appealing, appetizing and nourishing
for growing bodies. Develop a list of
options and let the kids decide what appeals
to their tastes. In planning lunches the key is
to prepare good-tasting foods that are both
nutritious and fun for kids to eat. For example,
these hints and options are worth a try:
Snack-wiches:
Think snack-size when filling the lunch
box, including sandwiches. Kids tend to be
drawn to food that is sized down
Use mini bagels topped with lean luncheon
meat roll up like turkey breast or ham
OBITUARY
PHIL SHEARS
Phil Shears, a real estate pioneer
who helped build the Chomedey
community, died on Tuesday,
August 26. More than 1,000 people
attended the funeral at Paperman
and Sons.
The familiar yellow Anne Shears
sign seen everywhere in the community
is tribute to the successful
business that he established with his
wife, Anne, thirty-one years ago. As
a new company in their first office
on Souvenir Street they had less
than a dozen agents selling properties,
and expansion over the years
led them to their present position
where they now employ eighty
agents.
He was a Golden Gloves champion
in his early years and sports
remained an active part of his life.
Involved in community life and
active in local charities, Shears was
one of the original founders of what
is now the Young Israel of
Chomedey Synagogue.
“He never had anything bad to say
about anybody, and nobody had
anything bad to say about him,”
said Anne Shears agent, Joseph
Levy. “They brought me in under
their wing twenty-three years ago
and treated me like a son. The office
is like a family. He touched a lot of
people through the company.”
Although he and his wife retired
from the company ten years ago,
Shears frequently dropped in to
keep abreast of what was happening
in the company.
A Chomedey resident for 46 years
and father and father-in-law of
Wendy and Steven Corber, Hal and
Linda, and Danny, he was a devoted
family man and the proud grandfather
of Jonathon, Rachel and Erica.
Pause for the “Paws of Hope
Walk-a-thon”
The Canadian Cancer Society is holding
its 5 th edition of the Paws of Hope Walk-athon
on Sunday, September 21, at the
Centre de la Nature. Registration will take
place at 9 a.m. to be followed by the actual
walk, which
begins at 10 a.m.
As the title indicates
this is a
fundraising event
with a difference
since it involves
the participation
of two-legged and
four pawed participants
in the
form of the family
pooch, who
will be taking a two to five-kilometer walk
with owners.
Last year more than $12,500 was raised,
according to Marise Perrier, Regional
Development Officer for the Canadian
Cancer Society, and this year’s target is
$18,000.
“It’s a fun activity,” believes Marise, “and
we’re lucky since normally dogs aren’t
allowed in the Centre de la Nature. They
made an exception for us since it’s a
fundraising activity. It’s a good cause for
fundamental research and support for people
touched by the disease.”
Participants – both two legged and four
pawed - are asked to obtain sponsors and a
certificate of participation will be awarded
to those completing the walk. A racer’s bib
will be given to people bringing in at least
ten dollars in pledges, a racer’s scarf for $25
donations and a scarf and bag for $50 for
donations of fifty dollars and up plus a bag
with the Walk-a-thon logo. A grand prize of
$500 worth of dog food will be awarded to
the dog collecting the most donations for
the Canadian Cancer Society. Should anyone
be in need of medical assistance, representatives
from a local veterinary hospital
as well as the city’s Emergency Measures
team will be on hand.
Sponsorship forms and information can be
obtained at veterinary clinics, pet shops, at
the Laval Cancer Society offices at 323 St-
Martin Blvd. West, or by contacting Marise
at 450-663-2628
