Dermatophytosis is caused by filamentous fungi (dermatophytes), which attack
keratinic structures such as hair (trichomycosis), the stratum corneum
(epidermomycosis) or the nails (onychomycosis).
Unlike other fungi, dermatophytes also live on carbohydrates. Optimum cultivation is
thus achieved on sugar-containing culture media (Dermatophyte Agar or Sabouraud
Glucose or Sabouraud Dextrose Media).
By adding cycloheximide, the growth of molds and non-pathogenic yeasts is mainly
inhibited. Chloramphenicol serves as an antibacterial inhibitor.
