Summary po<strong>in</strong>ts 1<br />
Sixty percent of child labourers are found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agriculture <strong>sector</strong>, one of <strong>the</strong> most dangerous <strong>sector</strong>s <strong>in</strong> terms of<br />
fatalities, accidents <strong>and</strong> occupational diseases.<br />
There are many challenges to address<strong>in</strong>g child labour <strong>in</strong> agriculture.<br />
Dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g between acceptable child <strong>work</strong> <strong>and</strong> child labour is necessary, as <strong>the</strong> latter is by def<strong>in</strong>ition harmful <strong>and</strong><br />
unacceptable.<br />
Livestock serves as at least a partial source of <strong>in</strong>come <strong>and</strong> food security for 70 percent of <strong>the</strong> world’s 880 million rural<br />
poor who live on less than USD 1.00 a day. Pastoralists make up <strong>the</strong> largest number of <strong>livestock</strong>-dependent people.<br />
Child labour with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>livestock</strong> <strong>sector</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s clearly understudied. The <strong>in</strong>formation available is patchy <strong>and</strong> concrete<br />
data difficult to f<strong>in</strong>d. The literature ma<strong>in</strong>ly reflects herd<strong>in</strong>g activities with<strong>in</strong> pastoral sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
There is a need to learn more about <strong>the</strong> situation of girls’ <strong>and</strong> boys’ <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>livestock</strong> <strong>sector</strong>.<br />
