Islanders nothing 

but ‘squatters’ 

ARGENTINE President Cristina Kirchner has dismissed the 

results of this week’s Falkland Islands referendum, in which 

islanders voted to remain British, claiming the vote was akin to 

a situation where “a bunch of squatters were to vote on whether 

or not to keep occupying a building illegally.” 

Kirchner said on 

Tuesday that the outcome 

of the referendum 

over the future political 

status of the Falkland 

Islands was a foregone 

conclusion. 

Residents of the remote 

outpost in the South 

Atlantic voted this week 

on whether to remain a 

British Overseas 

Territory. 

On Monday evening, 

the results showed that 

99.8 per cent had voted 

yes, with a 92 per cent 

turnout among the 

approximately 1,650 

Falkland Islands eligible 

to vote. 

Speaking at an event 

at the Presidential Palace 

in Buenos Aires on 

Tuesday, President 

Kirchner said that “it’s 

as if a bunch of squatters 

were to vote on whether 

or not to keep occupying 

a building illegally.” 

She quoted British 

Foreign Office minister 

Hugo Swire as saying 

that the referendum 

result didn’t change the 

situation “from a legal

“reiterate our commitment 

to dialogue, our

Cameron warns Argentina to respect the vote as 

Falklands vote overwhelmingly to stay British

week following their 

overwhelming vote to 

remain British. 

David Cameron said 

Buenos Aires should take 

‘careful note’ of the referendum, 

which went 99.8 

per cent in favour of 

remaining a British overseas 

territory. 

In a telephone call to 

Gavin Short, chairman of 

the Falklands Legislative 

Assembly, the Prime 

Minister said he was ‘over 

the moon’ with the result. 

‘The Falkland islanders 

couldn’t have spoken 

more clearly,’ he said. 

Overseas Territory 

‘They want to remain 

British and that view 

should be respected by 

everybody, including by 

Argentina. It is the clearest 

possible result there could 

be.’ 

Just three unidentified 

islanders voted to end 

British sovereignty three 

decades on from the 

Falklands conflict. 

A total of 1,517 valid 

votes were cast in the referendum, 

a turnout of 92 

per cent of the eligible 

islanders. 

The question was: ‘Do 

you wish the Falkland 

Islands to retain their 

current political status as 

an Overseas Territory of 

the United Kingdom?’

An SAS sniper who was 

jailed for illegal weapon 

possession said he was 

“elated” on Thursday 

after his conviction was 

quashed because a military 

judge improperly 

pressured him into pleading 

guilty. 

Sergeant Danny 

Nightingale was “deprived 

of a free choice” when 

he was effectively warned 

that he would face a sentence 

of five years if he 

did not admit the charge, 

the Court of Appeal 

heard. 

Senior judges criticised 

the conduct of Assistant 

Judge Advocate General 

Alistair McGrigor, who 

was alleged to have given 

a “direct wink” about the 

likely term Sgt 

Nightingale would face. 

They ordered a fresh court 

martial.

and references to a previous 

case - made by the 

military judge during 

legal argument ahead of a 

trial that had been due to 

take place last November. 

William Clegg QC, for 

Nightingale, said: “On the 

proper analysis, what the 

assistant judge advocate 

was saying here was 

‘unless you plead guilty, 

you will receive a sentence 

of five years’. 

“This is a message that 

should never have come 

from the bench.” 

Transcripts of discussions 

between the soldier 

and his lawyer at the time 

showed Sgt Nightingale 

understood the remarks 

to mean: “If I fight this I 

will get five years.” 

The court heard that his 

wife and father were both 

present and felt that he 

could not risk the prospect 

of such a long sentence. 

Mr Clegg said that the 

soldier - who is father to 

two young children - was 

left facing the prospect of 

“a very long period of 

separation from them if he 

persisted in a denial of 

guilt”.

If locked up for more 

than two years, Sgt 

Nightingale would also 

have faced serving time in 

a civilian prison rather 

than military detention. 

Overturning the conviction 

the Lord Chief 

Justice, Lord Judge - sitting 

with two other judges 

- said: “Our conclusion is 

that the defendant’s freedom 

of choice was indeed 

improperly narrowed. 

“Accordingly, the plea 

of guilty is in effect a 

nullity to be set aside. The 

conviction based on the 

plea will be quashed.” 

He said a judge must 

“maintain his distance” 

from discussions between 

defendant’s and their lawyers 

about whether to 

plead guilty to an offence. 

“It is axiomatic in our 

criminal justice system 

that a defendant charged 

with an offence is personally 

responsible for entering 

his plea and that in 

exercising his personal 

responsibility he must be 

free to choose whether to 

plead guilty or not guilty,”

Outside court Sgt 

Nightingale said he was 

“absolutely elated” but 

that the victory was

The soldier said that it 

was “frustrating” not to 

be able to serve in the 

Army while the case was 

ongoing.

beat odds of

million when he picked 

up a £160,873 

EuroMillions prize this 

year to add to the £1 

million sum he won in 

the Millionaire Raffle in 

September 2011. 

But the Bulgarian property 

developer, who lives 

in Ilford, Essex, joked that 

his windfall could have 

been even bigger. 

“I missed the big jackpot 

by one number,” said 

the 45-year-old, who was 

just one digit short of claiming 

£12 million. 

Mr Traykov said the 

thrill of his second win 

did not compare to his 

real passion, skydiving. 

“I wasn’t really that bothered,” 

he said. 

“Nothing compares 

with skydiving.” 

It is a hobby many fathers 

may not encourage 

their 13-year-old daughter 

to do, but not so for Mr 

Traykov, who was once a 

member of the Bulgarian 

skydiving team. 

“The first win enabled 

me to make a few changes 

in my life, most importantly 

sending my daughter 

Elaine to private school 

and maintaining her skydiving 

training sessions,” 

he said. 

Mr Traykov, who never 

picks his own numbers 

and always plays the

back about his second big 

money win that he didn’t 

even claim it until two

home was Ilford,” he said. 

“The place, the area, it is 

very safe, I have lovely 

neighbours.” 

For clean-living Mr 

Traykov, some of the trappings 

of a millionaire’s 

lifestyle will take some 

getting used to. 

Thinking back to his 

first win, he said he had 

difficulty celebrating in 

the traditional way. 

“I don’t drink and I 

don’t smoke so I had to 

waste a whole box of 

champagne until I got it 

(spraying champagne) 

right,” he said. 

This year, he did jet off 

to Cancun, Mexico, for a 

few weeks to ponder his 

fortune and said he wanted 

to renovate his own 

three bedroom “normal” 

home this time. 

“I’ve always worked 

very hard and never spent 

more than I have so 

money has never been a 

major problem for me,” he 

said.

ordered to breakfast 

from his cell at 7am yesterday 

morning by a prison

Iron Maiden drummer 

Burr dead at 56 

Former Iron Maiden 

drummer Clive Burr has 

died at the age of 56. 

Burr (above) had suffered 

from multiple sclerosis 

and died “peacefully in 

his sleep at home”, according 

to a statement on the 

band’s official site on 

Wednesday. 

Iron Maiden founder 

and bassist Steve Harris 

said in the statement: 

“This is terribly sad news. 

Clive was a very old 

friend of all of us. He was 

a wonderful person and 

an amazing drummer 

who made a valuable contribution 

to Maiden in the 

early days when we were 

starting out.”

wrestling a shark…while 

he was on sick leave 

A man who was hailed 

a hero after grappling 

with a shark in 

Australia has been sacked 

by his employers 

after it emerged he was 

out on sick leave with 

stress.

Marshallsea, 62, waded 

in and grabbed the 6foot 

shark by the tail 

amid fears it would 

attack paddling children. 

The charity worker, 

from Merthyr Tydfil, in 

South Wales, claims he 

risked his life at the 

beach outside Brisbane 

in January, when he was 

hailed a hero. 

A local news crew 

caught his intervention 

on camera and his 

exploits were beamed 

around the world. 

But also watching 

were trustees of the Pant 

and Dowlais Boys & 

Girls Club, a children’s 

charity for which he 

worked — he had been 

away on work-related 

stress since April 2012. 

His wife Wendy, 56, 

also worked for the charity

MP arrested after ANOTHER 

fight in Commons bar 

The MP Eric Joyce has 

been arrested after an 

alleged fight in a bar at 

the House of Commons, 

it was reported 

Thursday night.

Member of Parliament 

for Falkirk was held after 

the incident at the Sports 

and Social Club bar. 

A Metropolitan Police 

spokesman said: “Police 

were called shortly before 

10.30pm this evening 

to reports of a disturbance

a man aged in his 50s

Tribes: compelling 

new British play 

comes to Mark 

Taper Forum 

Los Angeles may be primarily 

as a movie town, 

but there’s often some 

great theatre to be enjoyed 

here too, a case in 

point being “Tribes”, 

the provocative and 

engaging play from 

rising British playwright 

Nina Raine, now 

playing at the Mark 

Taper forum in downtown 

LA. 

The play debuted at 

the Royal Court Theatre 

in London’s Sloane 

Square in 2010 before 

moving to off-Broadway 

last year. Tribes‘ genesis 

lies with a documentary 

Raine watched about a 

deaf couple who were 

expecting a child, and 

they said that they hoped 

their child would be 

deaf. She said that it 

occurred to her that a 

family was a tribe, whose 

members wanted to pass 

on values, beliefs and 

language to their children. 

She began to see 

that there were “tribes 

everywhere,” in groups 

including individual 

families and religious 

communities, with their 

own rituals and hierarchies 

that are hard to 

understand by “outsiders.” 

The play focuses on a 

Jewish family with a son 

who is deaf (with two 

hearing siblings) raised 

without knowledge of 

sign language. When he 

meets Sylvia, a hearing 

woman born to deaf 

parents who is now 

slowly going deaf herself, 

his interaction with 

her (including her teaching 

him sign language) 

reveals some of the languages, 

beliefs, and hierarchies 

of the family 

and the “extended 

family” of the Deaf community.

The Beatles as you’ve never seen them before... 

“There are so many stories 

behind the pictures,” 

says My Time 

With the Beatles photographer 

Henry Grossman. 

“This new book is the 

best of my many Beatles 

photographs. I’m happy 

to share some of my 

favorite work and 

thoughts on those 

scenes. These are souvenirs 

of places I remember 

and some very memorable 

friends.” 

“Even though The 

Beatles had lots of photographs 

taken of them, 

occasionally one of the 

photographers would be 

out of the ordinary,” says 

former Beatle Sir Paul 

McCartney who wrote 

the book’s introduction. 

“Henry Grossman was 

one such photographer.” 

“These had been lying 

dormant for maybe 40 

years because after Life 

magazine sent back the 

negatives and slides, I 

put them in my 

archives,” says 

Grossman. “I was a busy 

working photographer 

so I had other assignments 

to work on.” 

In 1964, at 27 years old, 

Grossman was hired to 

shoot the Beatles’ first 

U.S. television debut at 

what is now their most 

iconic and famous performance 

on The Ed 

Sullivan Show. In 1965 he 

traveled with the band 

to The Bahamas and 

Austria during the production 

of Help! Over the 

next three years, 

Grossman photographed 

private 

moments at home, parties 

and recording sessions. 

Grossman shot 

over 6,500 photographs 

of them, almost all of the 

photos unseen and 

unpublished until now. 

My Time With the Beatles 

is a compilation of 1,000 

photos of the Fab Four 

shot between 1964 and 

1968. 

The book weighs 13 

pounds and is 528 pages. 

Images are both color 

and B&W. The photographs 

are presented 

in chronological order, 

and Grossman gives 

details as to the photos 

and the situation for the 

photo that was taken. 

Grossman’s editors are 

Brian Kehew and Kevin 

Ryan at Curvebender 

Publishing. “I met Brian 

Kehew and Kevin Ryan 

when they came to me in 

New York looking for a 

picture to include in 

their book called 

Recording the Beatles,” 

says Grossman. “I 

brought out a slew of 

contact sheets and when 

they saw how many 

there were they flipped. 

Brian and Kevin told me 

I had the largest number 

of unseen Beatle pictures 

ever. They chose a picture 

of the Beatles 

recording at Abbey 

Road. That book is now 

a standard in the recording 

industry with its 

deep research into the 

technical aspects of 

machinery, tape, engineers 

and so on.” 

“Any one of these 

unpublished sessions 

turning up would normally 

be a great find,” 

says editor Kevin Ryan. 

“It was even more 

incredible that this many 

wonderful photos had 

gone unseen. This is not 

just another book of 

Beatles photos. This is 

among the most significant 

collection of Beatles 

images in existence, both 

artistically and historically.” 

Henry Grossman was 

born in New York City to 

renowned etcher Elias 

Grossman who had been 

commissioned to do portraits 

of Gandhi, 

Einstein, Mussolini, Paul 

Robeson and others. 

After attending Brandeis 

he studied acting with 

Lee Strasberg where his 

classmates included 

Dustin Hoffman and 

Elliot Gould. In addition 

to being a photographer, 

Grossman performed at 

the Metropolitan Opera 

as a principal tenor and 

on Broadway for a run of 

more than 1,000 performances 

in Grand Hotel.
