Seven terror plots 

foiled, claims PM 

LONDON: British security services 

have foiled around seven terror 

plots in the past year with fighters 

returning from Syria posing a 

growing threat, Prime Minister 

David Cameron said Monday. 

“Our security services 

have foiled no fewer than 

seven different terrorist 

plots right here in Britain 

over the past year alone,” 

Cameron said in a speech 

in London. 

“We need to do more to 

ensure our agencies have 

the resources and the 

information they need to 

prevent and disrupt plots 

against this country at 

every stage.” 

Cameron had earlier 

said that the plots were 

foiled in six months, but 

later clarified that the 

period was actually a year. 

In the wake of attacks in 

Paris that killed at least 

129 people, British 

security services will have 

to re-think their strategy to 

deal with multiple 

coordinated street attacks, 

according to the prime 

minister. 

“The more we learn 

about what happened in 

Paris the more it justifies 

the approach that we are 

taking in Britain,” 

Cameron told the 

audience at the Lord 

Mayor of London’s 

Banquet. 

“When you are dealing 

with radicalised European 

Muslims, linked to ISIL in 

Syria and inspired by a 

poisonous narrative of 

extremism, you need an 

approach that covers the 

full spectrum - military 

power, counter- terrorism 

expertise and defeating 

the poisonous narrative 

that is the root cause of this 

evil.” 

Cameron has said that 

signs of hope emerged 

from Saturday’s talks in 

Vienna on Syria on how to 

deal with the Islamic State 

(IS) group, also known as 

ISIL. 

Cameron added there 

were “hopeful signs” from 

Saturday’s talks in Vienna 

on Syria that progress was 

being made on how to 

deal with the Islamic State 

(IS) group. 

But he has stressed that 

any settlement must 

include the removal of 

Syrian President Bashar 

al-Assad, a sticking point 

between the West and 

Russia. 

‘Generational struggle’ 

Britain is to recruit an extra 

1,900 security and 

intelligence staff to 

counter the threat of 

terrorist violence 

following the Paris 

attacks, as part of the 

government’s five year 

defence and security 

review to be unveiled next 

week. 

It has been described as 

the biggest increase in 

British security spending 

since the 7/7 bombings in 

London that killed dozens 

in 2005.

fight what Cameron 

called a “generational 

struggle”. 

In addition, Cameron 

announced an additional 

£2 billion in spending on

to new weapons, 

vehicles and equipment. 

More of Britain’s aid 

spending would go 

towards fragile states, 

and moderate Muslims

crash of a Russian plane

aviation security at

air strikes against IS in 

Iraq, but has not joined 

in the operation over 

Syria. 

Cameron wants to 

extend the mission, but 

has acknowledged that 

work is required to 

convince opposition 

politicians in order to get 

his plan approved. 

House prices hit another new record

now fetches £286,000 

House prices in Britain 

have risen by 6% over the 

past year with an average 

home now costing 

£286,000. 

The surge in house 

prices has been led by a 

boom in demand in 

London, the South East 

and East of England. 

It means the average 

home in London now 

costs a record £531,000 – 

three times that of than the 

cheapest area, the North 

East, where the typical 

property is £158,000. 

Prices in the capital 

have increased by 7.2 per 

cent year-on-year, and are 

now nearly 48 per cent 

higher than the peak 

before the 2008 financial 

crisis.

Supreme Court 

tells migrants 

The Supreme Court has 

rejected a challenge 

against immigration 

rules requiring people 

to speak English before 

joining spouses in the 

UK. 

The case was brought 

by two female British 

citizens whose 

husbands, from Yemen 

and Pakistan, want to 

come to the UK to be 

with their families. 

Currently, the men 

must learn English and 

pass a test at an 

approved centre. 

Their wives argued 

this was not feasible and 

breached their right to a 

family life. The judges 

did not agree. 

The London court 

heard that Saiqa Bibi and 

Saffana Ali both claimed 

their husbands would 

not be able to pass a test 

before coming to the UK. 

They argued the men 

would have to learn 

computer skills and 

travel long distances to 

take their English tests. 

As such, their right to 

a private and family life 

under article 8 of the 

European Convention 

on Human Rights 

(ECHR) was being 

breached, the court 

heard. 

Since late 2010, the 

spouse or civil partner of 

a British citizen or 

person settled in Britain 

must pass an English 

language test before 

coming to the country. 

Before the amendment 

to the immigration rules, 

they were only required 

to demonstrate such 

knowledge two years 

after entering the UK. 

The panel of five 

judges were asked to 

rule that the pre-entry 

measure 

was 

“ u n r e a s o n a b l e , 

disproportionate and 

discriminatory”. 

The 

court 

unanimously dismissed 

the appeal. 

Britain’s best known 

madam Cynthia Payne – 

who was nicknamed 

Madame Cyn – has died 

aged 82, her family has 

said. 

Payne was known for 

running a brothel in 

Streatham, south 

London, that was shut 

down in the late 1980s. 

In later life, she became 

an after-dinner speaker 

and she has been the 

subject of books and 

films. 

She hit the headlines 

in 1978 when police 

raided a sex party at her 

home to find elderly 

men paying with 

luncheon vouchers.

Her life story was told 

in two films, one starring 

Julie Walters, and 

several books, including 

An English Madam. In 

1980, she was sentenced 

to 18 months’ imprisonment, 

reduced to six 

months and a fine on 

appeal, for running a 

brothel at her house on 

Ambleside Avenue. 

But, in 1987, she was 

acquitted of controlling 

prostitutes in a second 

trial at the Inner London 

crown court. “This is a 

victory for common 

sense. But I have to 

admit all this has put me 

off having parties for a 

bit,” she said afterwards. 

The BBC reported that 

she sent the judge, Brian 

Pryor QC, a copy of An 

English Madam 

following the conclusion 

of the 13-day trial with 

the inscription: “I hope 

this book will broaden 

your rather sheltered 

life”.

Horkin described her as 

“a national treasure” 

and an “extremely 

colourful archetypal 

English eccentric”. 

“She was a person 

with a very big heart,” 

he said. “She is someone 

who epitomised the

beliefs, however, shone 

through strongly in the 

campaigning activity she 

was involved with in 

order to change Britain’s 

sex laws, publicising the 

issue when she stood for 

parliament on two 

occasions in the 

Kensington and Chelsea 

byelection of 1988 and in 

the general election of

UK with winds of more 

than 80mph this week. 

Named Barney, the 

storm left 2,500 homes in 

the West Midlands 

without their electricity 

supply, according to 

Western Power 

Distribution, and Welsh 

residents have also been 

badly affected. 

Over 500 homes were 

still without power in 

Wales at press time with 

6,000 Scottish Power 

customers off supply in 

North Wales at one point.

independent. When the 

school told me she can no 

longer bring her cane into 

school, I just thought this 

must be health and safety

“She hasn’t had any 

problems with any of the 

other students, and none 

of the parents have 

complained about it - in 

fact, they have all been 

very supportive.”

Man held in death 

of Yvonne Fletcher 

A Libyan man has been 

arrested on suspicion of 

conspiracy to murder PC 

Yvonne Fletcher three 

decades ago. 

PC Fletcher, 25, died 

after being shot while 

policing a demonstration 

outside the Libyan 

Embassy in London in 

1984. 

Scotland Yard 

described the arrest of the 

man, in his 50s, as a 

“ s i g n i f i c a n t 

development”. 

He was detained on 

Thursday morning in 

south-east England and 

is now in custody. He 

was also held on 

suspicion of money 

laundering. 

Two other Libyan 

nationals - a woman in 

her 40s and a man in his 

30s - were also arrested 

on suspicion of money 

laundering at separate 

addresses in London and 

south-east England. 

PC Fletcher’s family 

said in a statement that 

her father Tim had 

recently died, with his 

“one regret in life” being 

that he had “never 

witnessed any justice”. 

PC Fletcher was one of 

50 officers policing a 

protest against Col 

Muammar Gaddafi’s 

regime outside the 

embassy when she was 

hit by a burst of gunfire 

from a first-floor 

window. 

The death of Gaddafi in 

2011 and the subsequent 

regime change provided 

new lines of enquiry, 

with police visits to Libya 

UNSOLVED: WPC Fletcher was shot to death outside 

the Libyan Embassy in 1984 

since then unearthing 

“new and fresh 

evidence”. 

The force has released 

images of 14 people they 

want to trace from a 

pro-Gaddafi group, 

which was holding a 

counter-demonstration 

nearby. 

‘Darkest day’ 

Video footage of the 

demonstration and 

shooting has also been 

released. 

The 54-second clip 

shows the chaotic 

moments after shots were 

fired, with dozens of 

demonstrators falling to 

the ground after a loud 

bang is heard. 

Commander Richard 

Walton, head of 

counter-terrorism at 

Scotland Yard, said: “The 

day Yvonne was shot 

remains one of the 

saddest and darkest days 

in the history of British 

policing. 

“We have never lost 

our resolve to solve this 

case and to bring to 

justice those who 

conspired to commit this 

act of murder.”

April, 1984, hitting PC

had to come to terms 

with another loss 

through the death of 

Yvonne’s father, Tim. 

“His one regret in life 

was that no one had been 

arrested... [he] never 

witnessed any justice. 

“Resolving this crime is 

still important to all the 

family. 

“Any information, 

however small, can help 

bring closure for the 

family and we therefore 

continue to support the 

Metropolitan Police in 

their 

ongoing 

investigation.”

yOGA: it’s vital to focus on flexibility and strength as 

we get older, says Ricky Parcell 

AMERICA has a rapidly 

ageing population, and 

as a nation we must pay 

attention to two key 

areas in life, both of 

which are critical to 

your future health and 

longevity....S & F! 

Do you know what 

they are? 

The first key factor is 

“Strength” which needs 

to be put in the spotlight 

more, especially after the 

age of 40 years old. This 

is when most people 

begin to lose muscle 

mass at the alarming rate 

of 1% a year - especially 

if one does not exercise. 

So that’s 20% of muscle 

mass gone at 60 years of 

age, unless you pump 

iron at least 3 times a 

week. This could leave 

you frail, and give you a 

poor posture - setting 

you up for trips, falls and 

injury in everyday life. 

The bottom line here is 

that if you don’t use it, 

you lose it! The body 

loves (and thrives on) 

body resistance 

training….if you push on 

anything, it pushes back 

and builds back stronger. 

So if you test your body 

only 3-4 times a week 

with resistance, the body 

benefits massively. In 

fact, a recent study over 

six weeks in Europe on a 

progressive weight 

training program for 80 

year olds, found that 

after the trial ended, all 

participants had similar 

strength to healthy 

young 18 year-olds.

we age our habits

people get into the habit 

of not maintaining their 

flexibility levels, 

hydration levels or 

healthy eating habits. 

These combined add up 

to lots of trouble down 

the line, unless we make 

flexibility exercises part 

of our daily 

routine....yoga or just 

simple stretching for five 

minutes a day can make 

a huge difference 

between struggling with 

day-to-day tasks or 

being able to enjoy life to 

the full, at whatever age

Meet Adam Linzey from 

Oxford who moved to LA 

2 years ago to pursue his 

masters degree as USC 

School of Cinematic Arts 

Was there a particular 

reason you chose LA? 

I always wanted to live 

in LA growing up, but 

it wasn’t until I was 

accepted to USC’s 

prestigious film school 

that I was able to move 

here. It all happened 

rather quickly and by 

surprise actually. 

Studying here is 

allowing me to pursue 

making the films I’ve 

always dreamed of 

making. I’m currently 

in preproduction on my 

thesis film, which is 

shooting next month. 

What do you miss 

most from home? 

Obviously family and 

friends, its always hard 

to make the timezones 

work for Skype calls, 

but the small things I 

miss are proper pubs 

and Maltesers. 

What was your first 

impression of LA and 

has it changed since? If 

so why? 

I’ve always thought of 

LA as being beautiful in 

it’s ugliness. The 

architecture is often 

uninspired but it has 

this gritty urbanity that 

I find really attractive. 

The more I explore the 

city the more I find 

things to love about it. 

Does that make sense? 

What do you find the 

biggest difference is 

living here versus 

Oxford? 

Driving! Growing up in 

Oxford I never had to 

drive and for my first 

couple of years here I 

didn’t have car! So LA 

has been the city I’ve 

had to learn to drive in 

- as scary as that 

sounds. 

Do you have any 

hidden gems in LA 

that you want to share 

with us? 

I don’t know if this is 

hidden, because it’s a 

huge thing in New 

York, but the Banana 

Pudding at Magnolia 

Bakery (West 3rd and 

Orlando) is the best 

dessert I’ve ever had. 

A lot of people have 

misconceptions about 

LA - did you? 

I suppose I was 

expecting the city to be 

more open - like a lot of 

Americans I know - but 

because the city is so 

sprawling and we 

spend so much time in 

cars it’s not as personal 

as you might imagine.

suggest to others who 

are thinking about 

making the move

look forward to the return 

of Lord and Lady 

Baaden-Boomethistle. 

There’s a murder and a 

secret involving a 

kidnapped baby. And, 

there’s a violation of the 

sanctuary of the church. 

Your typical British 

sleuthing. Overall, the 

story has too many twists, 

mysteries and subplots. 

For research, Malliet did 

a lot of reading on rural 

England and English 

villages. “I also follow the 

weather over there quite 

closely as it is always an 

element of my books. And 

travel, I get to the UK once 

a year on average. 

Yorkshire is a particular 

favorite although my Max 

Tudor books are set along 

the Southwestern coast. I 

recently revisited Orchard 

House, home of Louisa 

May Alcott, and I was 

teary-eyed as I was 

leaving. To have that kind 

of impact on generations 

of readers, I think that is 

what every writer secretly 

hopes for.” 

All four of the Max 

Tudor books to date have 

been nominated for the 

Agatha Award for best 

novel. Malliet’s first St. 

Just book, Death of a Cozy 

Writer, won the Malice 

Domestic grant and the 

Malice Domestic Agatha 

award. Malliet says the

some hero-worship of 

authors going on as I was 

growing up. I couldn’t

Nether Monkslip was the 

starting point for this 

series,” says Malliet. “I 

started doodling a rough

A Very Happy 

Thanksgiving to all! 

It’s that time of year again 

where we give 

thanks....Thanksgiving 

used to be a bit of a 

novelty for me when I first 

moved to America. I 

treated it as a practice run 

for Christmas - but these 

days (now that I am a 

bonafide American), I 

actually use this holiday 

to reflect on and 

appreciate all that I have. 

The story goes that the 

pilgrims and Native 

Americans all feasted 

together but I think that 

was just a good PR spin - 

other sources describe it 

more like the current 

situation going on with 

the impending arrival of 

the Syrian refugees. 

Apparently 26 US 

governors have said they 

will bar them from 

settling in their states. Not 

only is this idiotic in the 

obvious sense, but since 

when did we have state 

border control? My 

understanding is that 

once you have residential 

status you are free to 

travel nationwide? 

Either way Thanksgiving 

has good intentions and I 

particularly like that 

everyone, whether they 

have religious beliefs or 

not, can join in the 

celebrations and all come 

together. 

The main story on all 

our minds is surely all the 

horrors going on in the 

world, sadly far too many 

to mention. It’s so 

heartbreaking that the 

people who plan these 

atrocities encourage and 

brainwash naive 

individuals to carry out 

these evil actions on their 

behalf. Apparently a 15 

year old was involved in 

the Paris incident. I really 

can’t comprehend that 

anyone with an ounce of 

intelligence thinks it’s ok 

to commit these acts of 

terrorism - war is not the 

answer, we need to fight 

back with peace. My first 

peace march was at the 

age of 4 with the Women 

for Peace; they like to 

think they sowed the first 

seeds of harmony in 

Northern Ireland. I think it 

might be time to march 

again as this bombing 

stuff doesn’t seem to be 

working out so well. I 

have seen many people 

blindly pointing fingers at 

the Muslim community. 

As my great-niece 

wisely observed “if a dog 

bites you it doesn’t mean 

every dog in the world 

will bite you, whoever 

believes that, well they are 

just so dumb”. If only 

everyone could be as 

smart as an 8 year old!

Adele Rolls in 

Deeper With Her 

Latest Album, ’25’! 

British singer Adele 

has always been more 

than just a pretty voice. 

Though she’s blessed 

with a mighty 

instrument - a 

resonant alto that 

stretches to gleaming 

heights - what has made 

her singing stand out is 

its instinctive quality, 

her willingness to jump 

into a song heart-first. 

Where many 

contemporary pop stars 

are concerned with 

projecting attitude, 

Adele understands the 

value of unfettered 

emotion. Judging by her 

new project ’25’ out 

Nov. 20, the four years 

since Adele’s last studio 

album have provided 

plenty of fodder in this 

arena. 

Titled, like her previous 

efforts, for the year that 

inspired the record, the 

collection at first 

suggests an artist closer 

to 35, or even a decade 

older than that. There’s 

a recurring sense of 

youth flying by, or a 

longing as if it’s already 

passed. There’s no 

extended adolescence 

for this millennial, 

apparently. 

The stark opening 

piano chords of Hello, 

the first single, set an 

almost funereal 

tone. “Hello from the 

other side,” she belts, 

her singing seeming a 

tad less husky than in 

the past, perhaps as a 

result of her surgery 

following the vocal 

problems that thwarted 

her 2011 tour. 

But she sounds as 

strong and as 

vulnerable as ever, her 

voice sometimes 

threatening to break at 

the end of a note, only to 

come back in full, 

aching force. 

“The other side” is 

not the afterlife, but our 

time on earth following 

early adulthood. Other 

songs, too, approach the 

passage of time with the 

kind of dark 

romanticism a young 

singer would more 

typically use to describe 

a dangerous lover. “You 

still look like a movie, 

you still sound like a 

song/My God, this 

reminds me of when we 

were young,” she sings 

to a former flame 

on When We Were 

Young. 

On A Million Years 

Ago, a bit of 

melancholic nostalgia 

that could be a 

lost Jacques Brel tune, 

she remembers 

when “life was a party 

to be thrown,” and 

laments that old 

acquaintances “don’t 

recognize me in the light 

of day.” 

The co-writers and 

producers on 25, among 

them Greg Kurstin and 

Adele’s Rolling In the 

Deep collaborator Paul 

Epworth, craft 

tracks that sound lush 

but are also spacious, 

wisely keeping Adele’s 

vocals in front - even on 

more muscular numbers 

such as the 

galloping Water Under 

the Bridge and I Miss 

You, with its thick, 

i n s i s t e n t 

percussion. Love In The 

Dark is the only song 

featuring strings; on it, 

Adele begs, “Take your 

eyes off of me so I can 

leave.” 

25 ends on an 

uplifting note, though, 

with 

the 

chiming Sweetest 

Devotion, a love song to 

Adele’s three-year-old 

son. “I’ve been looking 

for you, baby, in every 

face that I’ve ever 

known,” she sings. Take 

heart, aging kids. 

Maturity and 

responsibility have their 

rewards as well.

are rolling higher than

revealed the name of 

the next installment of 

Prometheus, a flood of 

new information has 

just hit the internet.

The film, now retitled 

‘Alien: Covenant 

(originally Alien: Lost 

Paradise), now has an 

official logo and synopsis 

from 20th Century Fox 

confirming Michael 

Fassbender, (pictured, 

right), will return for the 

movie.

Rugby great Jonah Lomu dead at 40 

ICONIC: Lomu arrived on the world stage in unforgettable fashion at the 1995 World Cup 

New Zealand rugby 

union great Jonah Lomu 

has died aged 40. 

Lomu, who scored 37 

tries in 63 matches for 

New Zealand between 

1994 and 2002, had been 

diagnosed with a rare 

and serious kidney 

condition in 1995. 

It forced him to quit the 

game and he had a 

kidney transplant in 

2004, but the organ 

stopped functioning in 

2011. 

“Jonah was a legend of 

our game and loved by 

his many fans both here 

and around the world,” 

said New Zealand 

Rugby chief executive 

Steve Tew. 

“We’re lost for words 

and our heartfelt 

sympathies go out to 

Jonah’s family.” 

Family spokesman John 

Mayhew told New 

Zealand television that 

Lomu’s death was 

“totally unexpected” 

and that he had only 

arrived back from the 

UK on Tuesday, after 

spending time there for 

the Rugby World Cup.

entire country are with 

his family.”

Coleman said Lomu 

“was the first global 

rugby superstar”. 

He was a “huge 

inspiration to Polynesian

years with his battles 

against kidney disease, 

very inspirational to 

people suffering from 

chronic diseases as 

well”, he said. 

Lomu is survived by his 

wife Nadene and two 

sons. 

The son of Tongan 

immigrants, Lomu made 

his Test debut in 1994 

against France in 

Christchurch. 

As well as playing for 

several domestic teams 

in his homeland, he 

made 10 appearances for 

Cardiff Blues in Wales 

between 2005 and 2006, 

shortly before his 

retirement. 

Despite never winning 

the World Cup, he is the 

joint top try-scorer in its 

history - alongside South 

Africa wing Bryan 

Habana, scoring 15 tries 

in 11 games. 

He was at his best at the 

1995 and 1999 World 

Cups, terrifying 

defensive lines with his 

speed and size – he was 

6 feet 4 inches tall and 

weighed 262lbs. 

In a memorable match 

against England in the 

1995 semi-final, he 

bulldozed several 

players and ran straight 

over the top of full-back 

Mike Catt on his way to 

a try. 

His performance in that 

tournament has been 

widely credited with 

helping attract the major 

commercial deals that 

enabled the sport to 

enter the professional 

era. 

But a rare kidney 

condition, nephrotic 

syndrome, hampered his 

career. A later transplant 

was rejected by his body 

in 2011.

Jones named as new rugby coach 

Eddie Jones was set to 

become the England 

rugby team’s first 

foreign head coach on 

Friday. 

The Australian, 55, 

finalised the details of his 

appointment with Rugby 

Football Union chief Ian 

Ritchie during a meeting 

in London on Thursday. 

Former Australia and 

Japan coach Jones had 

needed to secure his 

release from a “long-term 

contract” with South 

African franchise the 

Stormers. 

Jones succeeds Stuart 

Lancaster, who left the

captain Steve Borthwick 

could be brought in as 

part of Jones’ coaching
