Versatile SB SprayDry ® Nozzles give you complete control
of particle size and consistency in medium flow applications
Model SB-MFP
SprayDry Nozzle
(with maximum free passage)
SBH-MFP SprayDry Nozzle
(with maximum free passage
and hand tight features)
Flexible design lets you configure a nozzle
to meet your exact specifications
SB Series SprayDry nozzles are available in three models,
each with different design features to meet your needs.
The cap of the SBH-MFP can be easily tightened by hand
and the maximum free passage (MFP) cap and core resist
clogging. The SB-MFP is a maximum free passage version.
The SB nozzle is a reliable, basic spray dry nozzle without
the maximum free passage or hand-tight features.
Featuring a choice of 120 interchangeable orifice insert/core
combinations, the nozzles feature capacity sizes based on
water spraying from 55 to 570 gph at 1000 psi (210 to 2170 l/hr
at 70 bar) with spray angles from 34° to 109°. Larger capacity
orifice insert/core combinations can be used at lower
pressures to minimize nozzle and pump wear. Maximum
pressure is 7000 psi (450 bar). Cores are available in
cup top or longer-wearing flat top designs.
Uniform drop size reduces
powder waste in many industries
SB Series SprayDry nozzles produce a hollow cone
spray pattern with a very uniform drop size distribution.
They also offer a choice of drop sizes that are controlled
by the nozzle’s capacity and pressure. Ideal for commercial
spray drying of powders in the dairy, food processing,
chemical, biochemical, and pharmaceutical industries,
the nozzles are suitable for use in all types of spray dryers,
flow systems, and open- and closed-cycle installations.
The following chart shows the drop sizes produced
by various orifice insert/core combinations at different
pressures. Values are based on water spraying at
70° F (21° C) in lab conditions.
Hand-tight and clog-resistant features reduce downtime
New hand-tight design simplifies maintenance
SBH-MFP SprayDry Nozzles use an O-ring instead of a
gasket so the cap can be tightened by hand and securely
sealed at high pressures up to 7000 psi. No tools are required
which simplifies maintenance in hard-to-reach places.
Maximum Free Passage core and cap design
reduces clogging and minimizes pressure drop
SBH-MFP and SB-MFP SprayDry nozzles feature a core
and cap design that offers increased free passage without
changing spray performance. Clogging is reduced and
production uptime is dramatically increased.
To reduce clogging, the number of slots on the Maximum
Free Passage core has been decreased, and the remaining
slots have been sized to pass a particle with a larger
spherical diameter.
Although the number of slots has decreased, all MFP
core sizes have at least two slots. This provides a superior
spray pattern, improved particle size distribution, and
therefore, a more uniform bulk density when compared
to single-slot designs.
Cup top cores were originally used to minimize pressure
drop. The maximum free passage design is much more
effective at reducing pressure drop, making cup top cores
unnecessary in most cases.
Improved SBH-MFP nozzle design facilitates reliable, trouble-free spray drying
Anti-bearding design reduces
danger of contamination
During spray dry applications, a few drops of liquid will
typically ride air currents back up to the nozzle orifice.
These drops then dry and build up, a process commonly
referred to as bearding. If left unattended, the build-up
can contaminate the batch and cause dangerous hot
spots. Our innovative anti-bearding design on the
SBH-MFP nozzle significantly reduces both build-up
and the maintenance time required to clean it.
The recessed tip on the anti-bearding nozzle
was designed and tested using state-of-the-art
Computational Fluid Dynamics. The software
simulates and predicts spray performance
using actual process conditions.
Integrated check valve
avoids wetting inside the dryer
A check valve body comes standard on the hand-tight
SBH-MFP SprayDry Nozzle. To inhibit draining of liquid
into the drying tower, liquid from the supply pipe is sealed
off at the check valve when the pump is turned off.
For an optional body without the check valve,
request the SBHN-MFP model.
Improved Sanitary Features
To facilitate compliance in food and pharmaceutical
applications, the SBH-MFP nozzle body incorporates
the following enhancements:
• Self-draining exterior surfaces
• No bar stock finish
• Shallow hex or flats with no sharp corners

Maximum Free Passage core
reduces clogging and dramatically
increases production uptime
Hand-tight SBH-MFP SprayDry nozzles utilize our Maximum
Free Passage core and cap. Cap modifications, larger
core slots and larger flow channels increase free passage
by as much as 128%. The maximum free passage design
is also effective at reducing pressure drop.
Back-up ring
Ensures a tight seal under high-pressure conditions.
O-ring seal
Securely seals by hand for operation up to 7000 psi.
No tools are required.
Durable construction resists
corrosion and increases wear life
All SB series bodies and caps are manufactured of type
303 stainless steel. Orifice and cores are available in either
M- or Y-type tungsten carbide. M-type tungsten carbide
provides greater wear resistance and is suggested for
abrasive and high-pressure applications. Other materials
are available upon request.
Standard gaskets are constructed of fiber. TEFLON ®
fluoropolymer resin or aluminum gaskets are optional.
For a tight seal by hand, SBH-MFP models feature a Viton ®
O-ring and PEEK back-up ring instead of a gasket.
Teflon is a registered trademark of DuPont Company.
Viton is a registered trademark of Dupont Performance Elastomers.
PEEK is a trademark of Victrex plc Corporation.
