WISTERIA MAGIC
Cascading wisterias, dripping with colour, are a
breathtaking sight, so plant now for future glory!
Wisterias are like a good red wine. They just get better with age,
producing more spectacular displays each year. Wisterias are
much loved for their sensational, springtime flowering. They' re extremely
versatile and can be grown on walls, fences, over pergolas and arches, or
along verandas and walkways. They can also be maintained as standards
or bonsai, or as container plants in large tubs or wine barrels.
One of the best ways to grow wisterias is on a pergola where the hanging
flowers can be admired from below. Wisterias are woody vines and require
a strong, sturdy support. They prefer full sun conditions and require about
six hours of sunlight per day.
For a full list of varieties and helpful growing tips see our Wisteria Fact
Sheet online at: www.dawsonsgardenworld.com.au
SAVOURY CHOICES
Add spice to life with these full flavoured herbs
Bay Leaf Tree
The Bay Leaf Tree (Laurus nobilis) is a hardy, slow growing evergreen tree. Bay trees
are easily maintained to any desired size by pruning, so they make ideal and hardy pot
specimens and are a traditional choice for shaping into topiary. Bay leaves add flavour to
stews, stocks, soups, pickling brines, marinades, chicken and fish dishes. When using bay
leaves, always remove them from the dish before serving. Bay leaves are also a component
in a bouquet garni, which is a bundle of herbs used to flavor many dishes, including beef
bourguignon and osso bucco. A basic bouquet garni can be made from 3 sprigs of Italian
parsley, 2 sprigs of thyme and 1 bay leaf. Bunch together and tie off with kitchen grade string.
FOOD FOREST
Visit Dawson' s brand new orchard at Forrestfield
There' s something new and exciting at Dawson' s Forrestfield. Through the Winter, our Forrestfield
team has been hard at work developing and planting Dawson' s very own orchard. The orchard is
designed to showcase what' s possible in home food production. The garden is packed full of fruit
trees, herbs and vegetables. Dawson' s Forrestfield Garden Centre Manager, Gavin Dalton says:
ª We hope the orchard will give people plenty of ideas and inspiration to start their own edible
gardens at home.º
The orchard garden makes extensive use of galvanised vegie growing tanks, while espalier and
dwarf fruit trees have been used as a way of getting more fruit trees into a small area. ª In an era
when gardens are getting smaller not bigger, it' s important to show people that space is no barrier
to having an edible garden. People are often amazed by how much food you can produce in a small
area or just a few pots.º
We look forward to watching the orchard grow. Come and visit the Dawson' s orchard and see what' s possible.
It' s situated behind the coffee shop with an entrance via the alfresco covered area or the rose area.
STRAWBERRY TIME
Now' s the time to get strawberry planting so you can enjoy delicious home
grown strawberries over Spring and Summer. If you haven' t had much
success in the past, try growing strawberries in pots or hanging baskets.
Use Dawson' s Premium Potting Mix for best results with container grown
strawberries. Feed with a slow release fertiliser and supplement with a
fortnightly liquid feed like Seasol or Powerfeed. Water strawberries regularly
for the best fruit production. Strawberries are best grown in sunny positions.
However they will benefit from some shading over Summer.
NATURALLY BETTER
New products for keen, green gardeners
If you' re looking for environmentally friendly ways to control
pests and feed your garden, here are some exciting,
new environmentally responsible products to help you
go organic.
Mighty Mites
Using Predatory Mites in the home garden
Spring is the optimum time to release Predatory Mites into
your garden, keeping the damaging mites under control.
Two-Spotted Mite (TSM), also known as Red Spider Mite,
is one of the most common and damaging pests on roses,
vegies, fruit trees and many common garden plants. Spider
Mite populations follow a typical ª J Curveº type growth
pattern. Populations start to build up in Spring as the
weather warms up, then rapidly increase during the hot,
dry weather over Summer.
Spider Mites are sap-sucking pests. The first symptom
of Spider Mite attack is usually faint, white speckling
or spotting on the upper surface of plant foliage.
As populations build up, they can often be seen as
silvery, grey-brown patches on the lower leaf surfaces.
BLOOMING BEAUTIES
In pots or in the garden, Azaleas are spectacular in Spring.
Azealas are at their brilliant best in Spring, so it' s the
best time to start or add to your collection. There' s a huge
range of colourful varieties to choose from, so plant now
to enjoy their spectacular flowering in your Spring garden.
You' ll find Azaleas have such a range of uses. They' re just
the thing to brighten up semi-shade areas and are great
for planting beneath deciduous trees. Azaleas are fantastic
for Japanese gardens, are perfect planting partners for
Camellias and make ideal pot and tub plants.
Severe infestations can seriously stunt plant growth and
leaves can be sucked dry to the point where full or partial
leaf drop can occur.
Predatory Mites specialise in feeding on Spider Mites, so
they' re a safe form of biological control you can use in your
garden. Predatory Mites quietly work away to keep Spider
Mite populations under control, helping restore the natural
balance in your garden. A Spring release allows Predatory
Mites to establish themselves and literally put the bite on
damaging populations of Spider Mites as they attempt to
build up numbers.
You can order Predatory Mites at your nearest Dawson' s
store. Once ordered at Dawson' s, your Predatory Mites
are express posted with Australia Post. You will normally
receive your order around 3-4 business days after it' s
been placed. Your Predatory Mites are posted in plastic
cylinders containing a vermiculite spreading agent. Each
cylinder contains an average of 3,000 Predatory Mites.
The predators are simply released by sprinkling the carrier
material over the foliage of target plants.
