Raise Your Standards
Reach for the heights with standard roses.
Standard roses are the aristocrats of the rose garden, and they literally take
your garden to new heights. Standard roses are created by budding desired
varieties onto a tall stem of quality Rosa Fortuniana rootstock. Standard roses
can be used in many ways. As they rise above other roses, standards create
dramatic effects and become irresistible focal points around the garden. Use
standard roses to frame entrances, add interest to rose beds, or add them to
feature pots and tubs to create something spectacular.
When planting standard roses, blend in Dawson’s Soil Improver with your
existing soil at the rate of 1 part soil improver to 2 parts soil. Water newly
planted roses daily until well established. Standard roses need a strong
permanent stake and it’s a good idea to replace the stake at planting time.
When growing in pots use a quality Australian standard potting mix like
Dawson’s Premium Potting Mix.
Each year we grow a select group of roses as standards, all selected for
optimum performance and potential. There’s a huge range of standard roses
available including favourites like; Bold Seduction, Brass Band, Courage, Double
Delight, Gold Bunny, Iceberg, Just Joey, Pope John Paul II, Satchmo, Seduction,
Tournament of Roses, and many more!
What’s Up Teddy Bear?
New Magnolia Teddy Bear is on the up and up!
Teddy Bear is a compact, evergreen form of Magnolia with a strongly upright
and pyramidal habit, reaching 3-4m high at maturity. Teddy Bear has gorgeous,
dark green, oval shaped foliage with a contrasting reddish-brown, felted reverse.
When plants are 3-4 years old they begin flowering, producing large (15-20cm wide)
fragrant white flowers. Flowering occurs between late spring and late autumn.
Teddy Bear grows in full sun to semi-shade conditions. It can be grown as a
stunning feature tree, large tub specimen, or group plant as a screen or hedge.
Standard Rose
Magnolia Little Gem
Also available: Magnolia Little Gem - Ever-popular, evergreen, feature tree, growing to 4-5m high and 2-2.5m wide.
Ideal small specimen tree or keep as a trimmed hedge. Can even be grown in large tubs! There’s no waiting for flowers
with Little Gem as it flowers from a very young age. Large, creamy-white flowers over spring and summer. Attractive,
glossy foliage with a brown-copper reverse.
Magnolia Kay Parris (available in limited quantities only) - Similar to Little Gem in size and habit, however, foliage is
more pointed and the reverse of the leaves are a darker velvet-brown colour.

Sizzling Summer Colours
It’s summer time and living and gardening should be easy.
Vinca Cora Cascade Magenta Vinca Cora Cascade Polka Dot Vinca Cora Cascade Lilac
Here are some of our top picks for long lasting, sizzling summer colours.
Cora Cascade Vincas - Developed in the United States, Cora Cascade Vincas
are a new take on these popular and hardy summer favourites. What’s new about
Cora Cascade Vincas is their fantastic trailing habit and larger vibrant flowers
which virtually cover the whole plant. These heat loving, cascading vincas are a
top choice for hanging baskets, pots, planters, window boxes, and display beds.
For best results with Cora Cascade Vincas use Dawson’s Premium Potting Mix
when potting them up, and water regularly for best bloom production. Cora
Cascade Vincas are available in a range of vibrant colours including; Cherry, Lilac,
Magenta, Peach, and Polka Dot.
Aloha Mandevillas - Bred in Australia, Aloha Mandevillas have taken summer
colour to a new level. These wonderful climbers provide a constant display
of large, showy, tropical blooms from mid-spring right through till late autumn.
Aloha Mandevillas are well mannered, twining climbers that can be used on
arches, pergola posts, and on wire against fences. They also make brilliant
container or basket plants, just keep trimming off the climbing shoots as they
emerge to maintain them as a bushy, compact shrub. Feed with a slow release
fertiliser and the occasional liquid feed with a mix of Seasol and Powerfeed.
Frangipani White Frangipani Red Frangipani Pink
Fantastic Frangipanis - Frangipanis are amongst the most spectacular plants
of summer. They seem to never go out of style with their architectural forms and
fragrant flowers. Frangipanis are tropical trees, reaching around 2.5-4 metres high
with a distinctive umbrella shaped canopy. Frangipanis are slow growers, typically
adding only about 20-30cm in height each year. They make beautiful and long
lasting container plants for sunny verandahs, balconies, and courtyards, where
they can be enjoyed for many years before they out-grow their pots.
Frangipanis are sun lovers and branch after each flowering, becoming more
beautiful with each passing year. So plant a Frangipani today, it’s sure to become
one of your garden treasures. Four fantastic Frangipani colours are available from
Dawson’s this summer; Classic White, Pink, Red and Tricolour.
My Favourite Roses
Our staff tell you their favourite roses!
Luke Simm
Production Manager - Luke began his career at Dawson’s
in 1997. Luke oversees the production of our rose crop
and is the first to see and assess new varieties.
Luke’s favourites include;
Candlelight (Hybrid tea) - Luke’s comments “ Never
disappoints, produces plenty of flowers and grows
into a healthy compact bush. The large double yellow
flowers will make you the envy of all your friends.”
Fire Fighter (Hybrid tea) - Luke’s comments “One of
the best red roses you will find. The superb fragrance
and long stems make great cut flowers or a tall upright
display in the garden.”
Just Joey (Hybrid tea) - Luke’s comments “ This is an
old favourite of many. The large apricot blooms with
frilled petals make each flower a piece of art. It has
excellent resistance to black spot and after a winter
pruning is usually one of the first to flower.”
Pope John Paul II (Hybrid tea) - Luke’s comments
“This has to be the best white rose we’ve ever grown.
It’s a great repeat flowerer and has a unique citrus
fragrance. Beautiful on its own, or mass plant to
brighten up any garden.”
Ebb Tide (Floribunda) - Luke’s comments “Caution should
be taken, the strong fragrance might bowl you over! This
amazing rose, has nearly black buds opening to rich purple,
old world style blooms. Short and compact growth, makes
Ebb Tide ideal for borders and containers.”
Gavin Dalton
Manager Dawson’s Garden
World, Forrestfield- Gavin
started at Dawson’s in 1995.
He can often be found in
amongst the roses.
Gavin’s favourites;
Luke Simm
Pope John Paul II Good Samaritan Ebb Tide
Best Friend (Hybrid tea) -
Gavin’s comments “Always a
favourite, with standout intense,
hot plum-pink, strongly scented blooms.”
Close To You (Hybrid tea) - Gavin’s comments
“A really fragrant, creamy, yellow rose. Perfectly
formed, high centred blooms.”
Gavin Dalton
Good Samaritan (Hybrid tea) - Gavin’s comments
“Has to be one of our best releases of recent years.
Large, wine coloured to deep fuchsia pink blooms.
A great variety for cutting and enjoying in the vase, but
just as spectacular in the garden. Healthy, glossy foliage.”

David Griffith
Manager Dawson’s Garden World, Swanbourne- David
joined Dawson’s in 2002. David believes gardening is a
great relief from the hustle and bustle of modern life and
that we can all benefit from the sense of wellbeing and
achievement that gardening gives us.
David’s favourites;
Climbing Pierre de Ronsard (Climber) - David’s
Comments “The world’s most popular climbing rose for
good reason! A timeless classic, Bourbon style, old world
blooms of pale pink with deeper pink centres. I love it on a
pillar or an arch.”
Angel Face (Floribunda) - David’s Comments “ A highly
fragrant and generous flowering, compact floribunda with
double, deep lavender blooms. I also love the frilled edges
of the petals and its value as a border specimen or low
hedge is exceptional.”
Top 10 Summer Rose Care Tips
Expert tips from our rose loving staff!
1) Use coarse grade chunky mulch, like Water-Wise Pine
Bark Mulch. Apply to 50-100mm thick but be sure to
leave a 15cm bare circle around the base of the rose.
2) Daily watering of newly planted roses is critical over the
summer and autumn period. Established roses will
survive happily on two deep soaks a week.
3) When dead-heading, cut back to a node 6 or 7 buds
below the spent flower to encourage strong new flowers.
4) Remember to keep feeding roses at 4 week intervals
with Dawson’s all-purpose fertiliser.
5) Control outbreaks of red spider mite with Mavrik, Natrasoap
or Eco Oil. Spray twice, two weeks apart. Remember to
spray in the cool of the evening or on cooler days. Never
spray during the heat of the day.
6) Treat hard to wet soils with quality soil wetting products
like Aqua Wett or Eco Hydrate. Or try Soil Solver to add
soil building and moisture holding clay to your soil.
(See Soil Solver article in Naturally Better section).
Fragrant Cloud (Hybrid tea) - David’s comments “I have
always admired the coral-red tones of this classic. Its
fragrance is exquisite and its warm colours and generous
blooms are impossible to ignore!”
Tournament of Roses (Hybrid tea) - David’s comments
“This is a magnificent, upright rose with shimmering pink
tones which make the blooms very attractive and rather
unusual. The foliage is handsome and it lasts well in the
vase. Its 150cm height makes it ideal as a backdrop to
Angel Face.”
Red Cascade (Rambling Rose) - David’s comments
“With its spreading habit, I am always amazed by the
ability of this rambler to constantly produce its lovely little,
cerise flowers. Great to spill over embankments and walls.
Also makes a great weeping rose.”
7) Seasol is a wonderful tonic for roses, apply fortnightly
as a liquid feed through the watering can. It’s a real pick
me up for heat affected roses, and full of trace elements
and minerals.
8) Before planting anything, including roses, first completely
soak the plant in its pot to ensure the root system is
saturated prior to planting.
9) Modern micro drip line is a very efficient way of watering.
Drip line can even be covered with mulch, so evaporation
is greatly reduced. Great for reducing fungal diseases as
foliage remains dry.
10) Standard and weeping standard roses require a strong
permanent stake for support. When planting, replace the
production stake (the stake the plant came with) with a
stronger stake or steel star-picket. If this is done at planting
time often the new stake can be put down the same hole
left by the old stake, so root damage is minimised.
Big is Beautiful
Bring on the shade this summer with Dawson’s Advanced trees.
Trees take time, but at Dawson’s you don’t have to wait years to
enjoy the beauty of trees in your garden. Our exciting range of
advanced trees will create an instant impact in your garden and
bring a feeling of maturity and structure to even the newest garden.
Plant Dawson’s advanced deciduous trees for beauty,
shade, and energy savings too!
Trees provide many benefits;
• Trees bring beauty and structure to the garden.
• Trees moderate the environment within the garden by
proving shade, wind barriers, and micro-climates for other
plants to grow in.
• Deciduous trees are really great power savers. Planting
deciduous trees along the north and west sides of the
house is particularly beneficial. This helps shade our homes
from hot summer sun while allowing the warming winter sun
to penetrate. The shading provided reduces summer heat
build-up in our homes and this in turn reduces the need
for air conditioning. Over the lifetime of a tree, these energy
savings really start to add up!
• We need more trees! Trees purify the air we breathe and act
as a carbon sink, locking away atmospheric carbon in their
woody tissue.
So, there are some compelling reasons to plant deciduous trees,
now let’s get planting!
Visit your nearest Dawson’s to see our range of advanced trees
and “yes” we can deliver them too! Here are some of the top
shady trees for this summer;
Popular Plums: Provide year round interest. Choose from
Double Pink Flowering Plum (Prunus x blireana) and Single
Pink Flowering Plum (Prunus cerasifera Nigra). Both are
compact, spring flowering trees growing to about 4m high and
wide. Nigra has deep burgundy coloured foliage while blireana
has burgundy flushed foliage.
Name
Prunus Blireana Crepe Myrtle Prunus Oakville Crimson Spire Pyrus Capital
Name
Weeping mulberry
Prunus Oakville Crimson Spire has quickly become one of
our most popular trees. This dramatic, narrow growing form
shows off burgundy-purple foliage and single white to pinkish
flowers in spring. Grows to only 1.5m wide by around 6m high,
so great for narrow sites.
Designer Pears: Ornamental Pears have it all. Attractive
designer shapes, colourful autumn foliage and white springtime
blossom. New Pyrus Korean Sun is a lovely small tree
developing a dense rounded canopy to 4m high and 5m wide.
Pyrus Capital is a very useful, narrow growing Ornamental Pear
which grows to only 3.5m wide, and up to 8m high. Pyrus
Glen’s Form Chanticleer® is a stately, feature tree growing to
8m high and 5.5m wide. Manchurian Pear Tree (Pyrus
ussuriensis) is much loved for its autumn colours and pyramid
shaped canopy. It reaches around 8-9m high by 7m wide.
So, a partridge in a pear tree? Why not? And More…
Chinese Tallow: Lovely rounded canopy tree and puts on a
reliable show of rich autumn colours. Height 5-8m, width 3-4m.
Indian Summer Crepe Myrtle Tuscarora: Lustrous green
foliage turning orange/red in autumn. Strongly upright branching,
forming a roughly goblet shaped canopy. Cerise flowers verging
on red. Height 4-5m x width 5m.
Weeping Mulberry: Beautiful tree forming a cascading dome
of green foliage. Ideal feature for lawn or courtyard. Edible,
mulberries a springtime bonus. Height and width to 3-4m high.
Many other varieties available including Judas Trees, Claret Ash
and Golden Robinias.
Handy Hint: Water your advanced trees regularly during the
critical establishment period. This means giving the trees
a good deep soak every day during the first summer.
Apply a minimum of 30-40 litres of water each watering
(this is around 4 large watering cans ).

The Kitchen Garden
Take your home grown produce from garden to table!
Food writer, Margaret Johnson was the star attraction
at our Blueberry Festival in November. Margaret’s
in-store cooking demonstrations showed us how
easy it is to turn your home grown blueberries into
delicious blueberry delights. Here’s Margaret’s delicious
Blueberry ice cream and blueberry sauce recipes just
perfect for a summer treat!
Marg Johnson’s Blueberry ice cream
This terrific recipe is made extra special in that it
does not need to be churned. Use the same principle
and change the flavour.
Serves 4
– 1 punnet blueberries, lightly crushed
– ¾ cup castor sugar
– 1 tbsp brandy
– rind of an orange
– 2 tbsp orange juice
– 1 cup cream
– 2 egg whites
– extra blueberries for serving
Mash up the blueberries with half of the sugar
and then stir in the brandy, orange rind and juice.
Whip the cream until just stiff.
Beat the egg whites and then gradually beat
in the sugar to form a soft meringue. Fold
together the blueberry mixture, cream and
meringue. Turn into a container and freeze.
Serve with the extra blueberries and perhaps
an extra slurp of brandy.
Blueberry Sauce
This simple sauce makes a delightful sauce to
accompany best quality vanilla ice cream. I would
serve it warm so you can enjoy the gentle mingling of
the two. A crisp biscuit and your simple treat is complete.
Serves 4 as an accompaniment
– 1 punnet blueberries
– 1/3 cup castor sugar
– 1/3 cup water
– squeeze of lemon juice
– a good slurp of your favourite liqueur
Place the blueberries into a small pot with the sugar
and the water. Bring them to the simmer and when
they just start to ‘pop’ remove the pot from the heat
and add the lemon juice and liqueur. Allow to cool to
warm and serve with ice cream.
