Truth is, readers, that although I am now writing this article, my passenger, Trish, must receive the real commendation .While I was enjoying scooting around all the bends down the mountain, she had the unenviable job of taking notes. All you passengers know the drill. While the driver enjoys the brilliant handling of the MX-5, you grasp the door and hold on tight. Trish is left handed so was only able to scribble down notes when she felt brave enough to release her hold on the passengers grab handle. All the while I was reassuring her - Yes the car was meant to go that fast and Yes we would stay on the corners – no problem. A short run at 100k/h blew out the cobwebs en route to our morning tea stop at Beaudesert. The straight run saw our group follow in sequence silver, white, blue, yellow, black and red. Passing numerous bikers, we could only feel sorry for them in their leathers while we sat in the beautiful sunshine and could pump in the air conditioning or heat whenever we needed to. A red car intentionally positioned up onto the trunk of a tree proved a welcome change from the copious election signage as we left Beaudesert. We passed through cornfields, slashed paddocks with hay assembled in lines looking like huge swiss rolls, past creeks overhung by weeping willow trees and grassland being back-burnt for bush fire prevention. We passed through Rathdowny, peaceful and quiet on a Sunday afternoon and then off the highway into unknown territory, with striking landscapes. Hillsides dotted with Norfolk pines, cactus, lantana and Stinking Roger (not sure of its correct name but it’s what we called the tall smelly weed down on the river banks on the dairy farm.) Cloudy mountain peaks were warning of threatening rain but our luck held out all day. I’m not sure how many ways a milk can has been used by farmers as a letterbox – on this stretch of road we sighted many imaginative ones, decorated to resemble Friesian cows, horses, a cat and even a beehive. The winding back roads were practically deserted, but for one group of bikers who gave us the thumbs up in appreciation of our cars and a lone cyclist in his lycras miles from anywhere. Gliders and their tow craft guided our way from above and into the township of Boonah. Our run skirted Mt French to the west which brought back memories of the 1970’s and abseiling down the 150 ft western cliffs . Again another great pick for lunch. Flavours café provided incredibly quick service, lovely food and a chance to chat with other members. What would the probability be that I sat with Lynne and Bill (I had been following their blue 10
NA all day) only to find they lived only two streets away from me. Accolades to Denise and Neville for devising a Run with new destinations and a run sheet peppered with historic facts on all the communities we were to visit on the way . Brilliant Run, breathtaking views , fantastic food and friends - it really lifted my week-end. Next time Trish comes ( she’s volunteered any time she’s not working ) I’ll leave her hands free for the door grip!
