Laminaria sp.<br />

Thick lea<strong>the</strong>ry, very <strong>to</strong>ugh and<br />

cartilaginous frond with thick<br />

cylindrical and distinct stipe and<br />

claw-like holdfast.<br />

Found growing in <strong>the</strong> lower<br />

lit<strong>to</strong>ral fringe and subtidally often<br />

forming dense kelp beds.<br />

Laminaria digitata – stipe<br />

flexible and smooth only<br />

stands upright in water,<br />

with broad split frond<br />

appearing finger-like<br />

growing up <strong>to</strong> 2m long<br />

Laminaria saccharina –<br />

characterised by its crinkly, wavy<br />

edge and undivided blade growing<br />

up <strong>to</strong> 4m<br />

Laminaria hyperborea – Rough stipe usually covered<br />

with numerous red algal epiphytes, stipe very stiff and<br />

stands upright with very broad finger-like split lamina<br />

growing up <strong>to</strong> 3m long.
