Why is Native<br />
Landscap<strong>in</strong>g Important?<br />
Native landscap<strong>in</strong>g provides an attractive, environmentally<br />
fr iendly landscape while reduc<strong>in</strong>g water and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
requirements. Do you want a beautiful yard, garden, school,<br />
park, or park<strong>in</strong>g area? Try a “Eco-Yard” with native plants!<br />
The <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> this publication will help you select and grow native<br />
plants that are naturally adapted and will thrive for years under extreme<br />
environmental conditions of M<strong>in</strong>nesota. This booklet provides an overview of<br />
native landscap<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and practices. It <strong>in</strong>tegrates the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of reduced<br />
water, energy, and chemical usage; wildlife habitat enhancement; and <strong>in</strong>vasive weed<br />
management. Native plant, <strong>in</strong> the context of this booklet, means native to M<strong>in</strong>nesota,<br />
with a few exceptions.<br />
“Eco-Yard Midtown” is a popular urban demonstration of enviromentally - friendly<br />
landscap<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g prairie grasses, wildflowers, ra<strong>in</strong>water gardens, shrubs,<br />
trees, and permeable pavers.
