The Mourners’ Bench playwright George Brant talks to Emily
Atkinson, Literary Manager, about the play.
What was your first inspiration for this play? Why did you want to tell this story?
Yes, well, the seed for the play came out of the discovery that both my wife and I share an
odd coincidence in our family backgrounds: both of us have older cousins – one boy, one
older girl – who were orphaned at a young age and taken in and raised by our
grandparents. This had always been a part of my family history that intrigued me, and
finding out that my wife shared this history only made me more interested in exploring it.
What effect does such an event have on young children? How does the extended family
decide who will end up raising the kids? How does a family heal itself? These questions
floated around in the back of my head for some time and finally, a few years ago when I
was at a place where I wanted to tackle a more personal, emotional play, they came to the
forefront, and now here we are.
What does your play say about family?
Oh, boy. Perhaps it says that you carry your family and your family’s history with you
wherever you go – that that can be a comfort or a burden. Perhaps that we all carry a
different piece of our family’s mystery, that we all are a different piece of that mystery
ourselves.
What’s the role of the past, of memory, in your play? Do objects carry memory?
The idea of memory is pretty huge in the play – its duality, how it can haunt you or be
something you cherish, something that can destroy or heal. And objects very much
contain memory in the play – the piano, the sheet music, the walls, the living room itself
– and even when the characters in the play don’t know the history of an object, the
audience carries that memory for them.
Is time the greatest healer? Can people truly change? Can we ever escape our past?
Hmm…I’m afraid time hasn’t healed much in this play. I think some of the characters
have tried to allow that process to happen, and others haven’t, but both sets have
unfortunately ended up in the same place.
I think the possibility of change is there in the play, however bleak it gets at times… the
hope for change. But I think the possibility for change in the play doesn’t come so much
from time, but more from the other characters, from the love they share for each other, the
desire to help each other reach a better place.
“Truth and justice” is the theme of our season. Who tells the truth in your play?
Can there be different versions of the truth?
I don’t think anyone in the play holds the truth per se – each of them has a story that they
think is the truth, that they call the truth. But even the most confident of them is aware
that they don’t have the full story. As the play goes on, with each new set of characters,
we in the audience discover information that contradicts or illuminates previous
assumptions - so I guess, by the end, we in the seats possess the most truth, but even for
us, there are a few questions left unanswered. I sometimes wish that all the characters in
the play could sit down and share their stories over a good dinner – I think they’d be
better off.
Is there justice or accountability in your play?
I guess not particularly – this is sounding increasingly grim! [laughter] The event that
sparks the play is one that defies justice, unfortunately – though Wilma and Caroline
fantasize about how they could enact their revenge despite that. And illness is never
“fair.” But if there isn’t Justice in the play, there is certainly Love. There is Love and
perhaps that is stronger, more resilient than justice.
How did working with our resident acting company help your play to develop, over
time?
The reading with the acting company was extremely helpful – I have had the privilege of
having the company read a number of my plays and it’s always an emotional and
instructive experience. It was funny – we had the reading of The Mourners’ Bench on the
day I was leaving for Cleveland – I literally had my car packed with boxes at a meter
downstairs as we read. And when it was over, I grabbed a muffin for the road and was
off! I was on such a high from the reading, I just kind of floated through the first few
hours of driving – no radio, no nothing.
These plays will be rehearsed together and will play together, in an integrated
schedule lasting from February till May. The in-rep production adds both pressure,
and excitement?
I’m thrilled about the in-rep aspect of the production. A company in Chicago produced a
mini-festival of my more comic plays toward the end of my stay there. We staged four of
my plays in rep, with most of the actors in two of the shows. It was absolutely insane, but
a fond, fond memory. The trickiest aspect to staging plays in rep is the behind-the-scenes
work – the scheduling of rehearsals, of performance times – which I plan on staying
blissfully uninvolved with! [laughter]
Do you enjoy seeing plays in rep?
As an audience member – the Henriad here at Trinity and on trips to the Stratford
Festival – I think it adds an extra layer of excitement. Seeing an actor pop up in a
completely different role than her previous one, or feeling how the plays reverberate with
each other thematically – I love it.

Three by Three 9
Dear Friends,
I take special pleasure in welcoming you here today, to Trinity
Rep’s Three By Three in Rep. I’m very proud of this unique
theatrical event, because it is something that could only happen
here. What we are doing here, with one company of actors
in three world premieres on the same stage, is revolutionary
within contemporary American theater; yet its roots lie in the
greatest theater traditions.
Perhaps you have heard of an English playwright named William
Shakespeare? Well, Shakespeare premiered all of his plays with
one company of actors on one stage, in a small city on a river
with a population of around 200,000 people (sound similar,
Providence?). His plays were tailored for his actors, and contemporary scholars delight in
constructing which roles were written for which of the members of his company.
Imagine seeing Shakespeare’s greatest interpreter, Richard Burbage, walking the wooden
planks of the stage, playing Hamlet one night, then Othello the next, then Richard III, then
Lear! Or showing up at the same theater day after day to laugh at Will Kempe as he worked
his way through Shakespeare’s great comic roles: Dogberry, Bottom, Costard, and Falstaff. It
was possible to see all of these characters on different days in the same theater because these
shows were all played in “repertory” by one company of actors on the same stage.
Indeed, all Elizabethan playhouses worked this way: one company of actors, one stage, and
a repertoire of plays. This remained the prevailing producing model throughout Europe for
the next several hundred years – Molière worked this way, as did Stanislavski and Chekhov
– and repertory companies are still the prevailing model of major European theaters today.
Pick any day to go to the Comedie Francaise in Paris, and you can see one show by Racine
at the matinee and another by Molière in the evening, all performed by their venerable
company.
The chief reason I chose to come to Trinity Rep six years ago was because of the resident
acting company. I have always known that we could develop plays specifically for and with
these actors, and that the plays would be transformed by their presence. You may have
seen the plays we’ve developed recently: Some Things Are Private, Shapeshifter, The Dreams of
Antigone, The Completely Fictional – Utterly True – Final Strange Tale of Edgar Allan Poe, among
others. A wide range of challenging work, all uniquely Trinity Rep.
Three by Three in Rep takes us one step further, by allowing three world premiere plays to
be in conversation with each other, in dialogue, in performance. All three of these plays are
responses to the current American moment, and all three deal with how we construct our
identities and our relationships in a post-nuclear-family reality. They all deal with loss, with
survival, and with hope. And I believe they are enriched by this repertory conversation, and
by the virtuosity of our wonderful acting company.
Ultimately, I hope you will be as excited about our artistic experiment as we are. Sit back
and enjoy being among the first people to experience these Trinity Rep plays. I look forward
to seeing you at the theater!
