Tuesday 5th March, 8:00pm<br />
This special event will provide a great opportunity to learn<br />
about the Jews of Japan from the 19th century till today.<br />
Our guest speakers will be followed by a delicious spread of<br />
Japanese delicacies, with sushi in abundance, provided by<br />
Sushi Haven.<br />
The evening will begin with an enlightening presentation on<br />
The History of Jewish Settlement in Japan, by Rabbi Jeff Berger.<br />
This presentation will include:<br />
~ The foundation of a Jewish community from 1860<br />
~ Japan as a haven for Jews during the Shoah<br />
~ Kobe and Tokyo - Remarkable contemporary communities<br />
~ The fascinating Jewish communities of Nagasaki<br />
and Yokohama<br />
~ Amazing tales of Japanese converts to Judaism<br />
~ Japanese anti-Semitism?<br />
~ Holocaust education in Japan
Rabbi Berger’s presentation will be followed by <strong>Kinloss</strong>’s<br />
very own Scott Saunders who lived in the Far East for fifteen<br />
years. Scott, who is a great lover of Japan, will be sharing his<br />
fascinating personal stories and experiences.<br />
Originally from New York, Rabbi Jeff Berger<br />
has lived in Israel, Japan and now London.<br />
He is currently the Rabbi of the Rambam<br />
Sephardi Synagogue in Borehamwood.<br />
Rabbi Berger previously worked in<br />
electronic sales and marketing, which took<br />
him to Japan, where he spent much time. While there, he met<br />
his Japanese wife Michie and they now have two children.<br />

the award winning film<br />
Torn<br />
Following the screening of the film<br />
The Chief Rabbi of Poland<br />
Rabbi Michael Schudrich<br />
will speak about fascinating issues arising from the<br />
film, in which he features, followed by Q &A<br />
Torn tells the powerful story of Romuald Waszkinel. Can one<br />
be a Catholic Priest and an observant Jew at the same time?<br />
12 years after he was ordained as<br />
a Polish Catholic priest, Romuald<br />
Waszkinel discovered that he was<br />
born to Jewish parents and that his<br />
name was Jacob Weksler.
This film follows his amazing journey, from conducting<br />
mass in a church in Poland to life as an observant Jew in a<br />
religious kibbutz in Israel. Romuald is torn between his two<br />
identities. He is unable to renounce either, and therefore<br />
is rejected by both religions and the State of Israel. He is<br />
required to choose...<br />

Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich<br />
New York born, Rabbi Michael<br />
Schudrich served as Rabbi of the Jewish<br />
Community of Japan from 1983 to 1989.<br />
He began working in Poland in 1990 on<br />
behalf of the Lauder Foundation. In<br />
2000, he became the Rabbi of Warsaw<br />
and Lodz and since 2004 has served as<br />
Chief Rabbi of Poland.<br />
Refreshments will be served at the end of the evening.<br />
