Caribou will<br />
be missed<br />
THE retirement <strong>of</strong> the DHC-4 Caribou<br />
last November was not only the end <strong>of</strong><br />
an era for the RAAF, it was a significant<br />
occasion for the Army, particularly<br />
members <strong>of</strong> 69 Ground Liaison<br />
Section and 1 Ground Liaison Group.<br />
The Army used the Caribou as a light<br />
tactical transport aircraft for its ability to<br />
take <strong>of</strong>f and land on short and unprepared<br />
airstrips.<br />
During its 45 years <strong>of</strong> service, the aircraft<br />
operated in places such as Vietnam,<br />
PNG, East Timor and Solomon Islands.<br />
The three staff members at 69<br />
GL Sect, embedded with 38 Sqn in<br />
Townsville, worked with the Caribou<br />
over their careers and have a s<strong>of</strong>t spot<br />
for the aircraft. Former OC Maj Graeme<br />
Wren remembered working with the<br />
Caribou more than 32 years ago when he<br />
enlisted.<br />
“I was a gunner in my early days<br />
before commissioning in 2002 and<br />
changing corps to infantry,” he said.<br />
“I remember we conducted a low altitude<br />
parachute ejection system drop by<br />
Caribou with 105mm ammunition, which<br />
hadn’t been done in recent times.<br />
“The Army relied upon the Caribous<br />
frequently before the advent <strong>of</strong> the Black<br />
Hawk when it was just the Caribous, C-<br />
130 and Iroquois.”<br />
He said the Caribou had provided<br />
excellent service in support <strong>of</strong> the Army<br />
over many years and would be missed.<br />

Monument<br />
to engineers<br />
A NEW monument unveiled at Bulimba Barracks<br />
“immortalises” RAEME’s 65-year presence at the<br />
Brisbane location.<br />
The RAEME Association (Qld) organised the monument<br />
that lists the 36 regular and reserve units that<br />
have served at the barracks since 1945.<br />

A ceremony to<br />
dedicate the monument<br />
was held in front <strong>of</strong> a<br />
crowd <strong>of</strong> 400 ex-members<br />
<strong>of</strong> RAEME and<br />
their families late last<br />
year.<br />

said the monument<br />
would be a permanent<br />
reminder <strong>of</strong> the dedication<br />
and service shown<br />
by thousands <strong>of</strong> soldier<br />
tradesmen and women.<br />
“It is appropriate that this monument has been<br />
erected now as RAEME units no longer exist as such<br />
and the Bulimba Barracks site is due to be closed in the<br />
next few years,” Col Snowdon said.<br />
He said RAEME occupied the barracks in 1945<br />
when “the Australian Army was handed the keys” by<br />
the US Army.<br />
Grants from the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Suburban<br />
Initiative Fund and the Veterans’ Affairs <strong>Department</strong>,<br />
and donations from members <strong>of</strong> RAEME associations<br />
around the nation funded the monument.<br />

Made-to-measure uniforms<br />
MADE-to-measure uniforms will not be treated as a<br />
priority unless it meets the priority criteria. ADFA/RMC<br />
currently have precedence.<br />

TO REPORT a defect against a clothing item, a RODUM<br />
must be submitted in addition to any unit promulgated<br />
