SO IS THE ACQUISITION OF NEW SKILLS AND ABILITIES ENHANCES NORMAL,
STRAIGHTFORWARD EXISTENCE?
‘You are spoiling my concentration,’ Landon warned in a singsong voice.
Dillion crashed into the seat before the table, managing not to spill the beer.
Landon was already placing his left hand on the table, fingers spread wide. With
his right hand, he began to jab it at the patches of table between his fingers, one
gap after the other, slowly at first, but soon picking up speed...
Moments later, Landon’s left hand was wrapped in a crude bandage, the
numerous wounds sterilized in convenient alcohol. Gritting his teeth, Landon
managed to use the bandages to tie the handle of the knife to his left wrist, and
then placed his intact, right hand on the hand. ‘Right! Is everybody watching this
time?’ he demanded impatiently.
‘Yeah.’
>YEAH.
‘Right...’
He dipped the knife down towards his remaining hand, repeating the trick...
‘If at first you don’t succeed,’ Landon was saying as he finished bandaging his
right hand, using his elbow to wipe some of the blood off the table, ‘try, try again.’

‘Stop taking the fun out of things!’ Dillion yelled up at the ceiling.

‘Gratifications of pleasures,’ said Landon haughtily as he tried to pick up the
knife with his bandaged hands and shoving it into his open mouth, ‘aren’t logical
to start with.’

‘Damn right,’ said Landon, muffled with the knife handle gripped between his
teeth. ‘Right. Dillion. Put your hand down on the table.’
‘No.’
‘Do it!’
‘Uh-uh.’
‘Honest, it will work this time...’
‘Buy me a drink first.’
‘Oh, all right, but you have to carry them...’

Time passed, and somehow they came to the conclusion that a round of karaoke
would be a brilliant idea. The pub seemed suddenly full of men and women in
their sixties, dressed in old-fashioned tuxedos and long bright prom dresses. None
of them seemed entirely certain whether they were disgusted or charmed by the
trio’s performance.
‘Wars and violence, they happen every day!’ sang Dillion cheerfully.
