whole of His <strong>Church</strong> in this grave hour of her history. They<br />
believe they have something to bring of value to the whole<br />
Body. They believe they have something to gain by larger<br />
fellowship <strong>with</strong> all who truly belong to Christ. They are<br />
greatly encouraged by many world-wide tokens that old<br />
prejudices are melting and a new era of mutual appreciation is<br />
dawning. Let it be so. Brethren, let us receive one another, as<br />
Christ also received us to the glory of God."<br />
The <strong>Pentecostal</strong> Experience<br />
The very name by which this conference is designated bears<br />
witness to the fact of the <strong>Pentecostal</strong> experience, for although<br />
our churches bear different denominational titles we all<br />
accept, by the fact of our participation here, the broad<br />
designation of "<strong>Pentecostal</strong>."<br />
First of all I propose to speak about an EXPERIENCE.<br />
Then I want to attempt an analysis of that experience. Finally,<br />
it must be my duty to relate what I have had to say to the<br />
general theme of this conference.<br />
1. The baptism in the Holy Spirit as an experience, and not merely a<br />
doctrine.<br />
It is possible to enjoy that experience, and thousands have<br />
done so, <strong>with</strong> hardly any intellectual grasp of the doctrine of<br />
the Spirit. But it seems to me that the weakness of most<br />
sections of the Christian <strong>Church</strong> where the Holy Spirit is<br />
concerned is that He has become the subject of theological<br />
dogma rather than a burning experience in the personal lives<br />
of believers.<br />
Let me hasten to say that I am very far from despising the<br />
importance of correct theological views regarding the Third<br />
Person of the Trinity; but let us remind ourselves that from<br />
the Day of Pentecost onwards the Early <strong>Church</strong> enjoyed a<br />
45
