To hit – usually to deal a single, strong blow, definitely directed.<br />
To hit is often interchangable with to strike; if, however, the<br />
idea of impact is implied, to hit is to be preferred.<br />
To beat – to strike repeatedly, to give repeated blows. Also<br />
used figuratively.<br />
E.g. Why did you strike (hit) him in the face? She hit (struck)<br />
him on the nose. He hit (struck) his head against the door.<br />
Some parents beat their children when they are not good. His<br />
heart is still beating.<br />
Phrases:<br />
strike a match; strike a blow<br />
hit the target; hit the nail on the head; a hit – big success<br />
beat sb. black and blue; beat a record; beat a carpet; beat one’s<br />
breast; beat the drum<br />

I. Consult a dictionary and practise the pronunciation of the<br />
following words:<br />
universe, idealistic, queer, knotted, primeval, unfathomed, oyster,<br />
hotch-potch, squeamish, chivalry, to twiddle, thorn tree, frieze skirt,<br />
battered, peacock, tam-o’-shanter, forehead, catechism, casement,<br />
fowl, mare, oblique, shepherd.<br />
II. Explain the polysemy of the words and phrases in italics and<br />
then translate them.<br />
