Conway House
Charity Appeal 2012
As many people may know, Conway House has had The
Canberra Blind Society as its major charity organisation
for several years. The House values the contribution
that CBS continues to provide in the ACT area. The
Canberra Blind Society depends solely on the three
collection days in early May. This year, 26 Year 8 and
9 Conway boys braved the cold to collect at Woden
Plaza and Mawson Southlands shopping centres on
Thursday 3 and Friday 4 May in two hour sessions.
Last year, 2011, the boys collected just over $1,500
for the CBS. This year the boys managed to collect
$2, 417.10 which was a wonderful effort and greatly
appreciated by the Canberra Blind Society.
Pictured are a few of the boys displaying the sum
collected.
Gifted and Talented
Conference 2012
On Tuesday 15 May, Marist hosted the ACT Gifted and Talented Conference for
approximately two hundred students from many schools across the ACT. The
conference caters to the Gifted and Talented programs in schools by offering
university styled lectures from guest speakers on various philosophical topics
and current debates.
Julie Arliss presented a series of seminars on theoretical concerns such as
the physical and psychological perception of time, the question of what is
consciousness and the philosophy of love and relations in contemporary
society. Julie lectures at King’s College, London, and works in close association
with Oxford and Exeter Universities, and is principal examiner at Cambridge
setting questions for the Philosophy Department. Her extensive knowledge and
exquisite oratory skills provided a highly engaging and challenging discussion.
Jeffery Hodges delivered a lecture on the ideas of resilience and self-esteem
to the symposium. His talk focused on how adolescents can develop skills
required to cope with stress and adversity in this high pressured modern world.
Jeffery is a performance consultant who manages elite athletes to achieve their
goals in Queensland.
The day was an enormous success culminating in an open debate amongst the
students. All participants seemed to value the diverse content and ideology
offered, finding the intellectual experience inspiring.
