Marist College Enews MAY 16, 2012 Marist Canberra Football Club www.maristfootball.com.au Marist Hockey Club Report We had another beautiful and busy day for Round 2 with 17 home games. The Canteen was kept very busy and the UK Tour boys are doing a wonderful job cooking sausages and serving drinks and food. The club is also selling Entertainment books and merchandise from the canteen. PREMIER LEAGUE Our U16 and U18 Premier teams played Canberra FC last weekend and The cold weather has arrived and hockey parents frantically searched their wardrobes for the winter hockey woollies. Round 2 saw some very pleasing results - from both the sideline fashion and hockey perspectives! U13 Blue Marist 6 - Wests 2. Our first game for the season saw Jesse Absolom peak a little early and score the goal of the season. This was a really pleasing result given the new make-up of the team and the fact that most of the boys had only just returned from Year 6 camp. The boys worked extremely well together and dominated the match with some well-crafted attacks on goal. Special thanks to Isaac for racing straight from the camp bus to the match to make sure we had a full team. U15/1 Marist 3 - Daramalan 1. The game was extremely close with the scores tied at nil all at half time. However, in the second half, Marist lifted and was quickly in the lead 3 - 0. Daramalan had a late surge but it wasn’t enough to take the lead. Goal scorers, Alex and Jacob. A big thank you to Albert, Charlie and Toby for playing with the team. Marist Australian Football Club Mixed results again this week however, I hope you all spoilt your Mums on Mothers Day. At Marist on Lindwall Oval it was a sea of Pink to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Thank you to all those who made the day possible from the Canteen to the decorations that made the day special. This week’s games of the Junior fixture. Home – At Lindwall this week are: 19 May, Round 3: U12s Div 1 at 9:15am, U14 Div 2B at 10:45am then U14 Div 2A at 1pm. 20 May, Round 9: U18s Marist Vs Gungahlin 9:30am. Come down and watch a game and have a hot coffee, bacon and egg rolls, pies – it’s all there! Away – U10s Qbyn Vs Marist 9:15am (Halloran Drive); U11s Gungahlin Jets Vs Marist 10:45am (Amaroo 102); U14 Div 1 Tuggeranong Hawks Vs Marist 9:15am (Gordon 102); U16 Div 2 Tuggeranong Hawks Vs Marist 11:05am (Gordon 102); U16 Div 1 Tuggeranong Hawks Vs Marist 1pm (Gordon 102). both teams played very well but went down 2-3 in the U18’s and our U16 Premiers lost 2-4. They are placed 7th and 5th on their respective ladders. This week they have another tough opponent in Belconnen at Belconnen who are sitting 2nd place in both divisions KANGA CUP Kanga Cup nominations close 31st May. This year’s tournament will run Peter Moon - Secretary from 8 July – 13 July. If you wish to enter a team, please let the club know. The club will pay the nomination fee of $200.00 GOAL KEEPER TRAINING Don’t forget Goal Keeper training for any Marist goal keeper on Thursdays between 3.30 – 5.00pm on Oval 3. Matt Selems - President U15/2 Marist 1 - North Canberra 1. A cold Friday night at Lyneham saw the team show great commitment to hold their opposition to a draw. Aidan Goodwin chased down every ball, despite an injury early in the first half. Matthew Barton was solid in defence and was helped by some good tackling from Andrew Simpson. With the sides still locked at one all into the second half, it took some dynamic energy from Yuri Arnould on the forward line and a controlled shot from Stefhan Meyer, to open the scoring. With North Canberra coming back to score a few minutes from the final whistle, the boys had to dig deep to keep out waves of attack from the opposition and Josh Trevor worked tirelessly in defence. All in all a fantastic effort from the boys without substitutes to provide any relief during the game. U18/1 Marist 6 – Canberra Grammar 0. After losing narrowly to St.Pats (1-2) in round 1, the First XI had a handsome win over Grammar. Marist dominated right from the beginning and the attempts on goal flowed like clockwork. It wasn’t long before the boys opened the encounter with a goal from a short corner (second of two) in the 6th minute from John Blake. They followed up with three more goals to John Dufty, Sean Baker and Jeremy Hopkins. The second half was littered by nearly double the shots on goal but yielding only 2 goals to Jamie Hawke and again John Dufty. Grammar rarely ventured into our D with most of the game being played in their half. U18 Sky Marist 3 – Daramalan 1. After a very sloppy start (including tackling our own players) we held our game in the first half and it was nice to see we had subs on the side line. It was a much different game in the second half with small talk from the coach and Natural snake lollies boosting the boys’ running on the field. Daramalan had no idea what hit them with Patrick moving to centre half and taking it to Darra scoring our fist goal. Not long after Marlon managed to get a sitter and scored next to the post. A short corner game Mitchell the chance to hit the backboard and put us further ahead. Not to be out done, Darra managed to put one in our net. The Marist Australian Football Club would like to pass on our condolences and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Brendan Dorman, who passed away this week after a long battle with illness and who will be sorely missed by all who knew him at the Eastlake Football Club, Marist and the AFL Canberra communities. Brendan was Chairman of Football at the Eastlake Football Club, Committee member, Coach, past player and life member of the EFC and through the EFC a great supporter and sponsor of AFL at Marist. Through Brendan’s support there have been and are now many ex-Marist players playing across all grades of the EFC, including Dean Roulstone, past MAFC Player and 100+ game player at EFC, who lead the EFC Club tribute at the weekend wearing his and Brendan’s No32 guernsey. Brendan is an uncle to Reg Dorman(2010), Luke(2009) and Tom Cusack(2012) and brother to Chris Dorman, MAFC member and coach of many Marist AFL teams over past years. President MAFC
Marist College Enews MAY 16, 2012 Junior School Happenings Dear Marist Families, Easter Sunday seems to have been such a long time ago. What is easily forgotten in the business of life though is that we are still in the season of Easter. This time, when we celebrate the reality of Jesus living among us, will come to an end on Sunday at the feast of the Ascension. The following Sunday is an even more significant feast in the Church. The last Sunday of this month (the 27th) gives us the opportunity to celebrate a very special birthday; the birthday of the Church. The feast of Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Spirit to the followers of Jesus (Act 2), after which, the disciples went out and enthusiastically proclaimed the Good News of Jesus. These frightened disciples were transformed into bold preachers by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a consoling companion in our efforts to live out the values of the Gospel. We hope that in our faith journeys we learn to listen to the voice of the Spirit, which speaks to us from many sources. Students in Year 6 are busy preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation in their classes at School and with their Parish community. As they prepare for this step in their lives we pray they will be able to ‘hear’ the Spirit speaking in their lives. Please keep all the Year 6 boys in your prayers as they reflect and learn about the Holy Spirit. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide. Give them a spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgement and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Marist College is fortunate in that it has grounds that allow all boys to kick a ball, run and enjoy the sunshine. Our after-school sports training is also well catered for through the grounds of the College and surrounding ovals. All the volunteers who take after-school sports training sessions continue, in a very real way, the supervision of students. I am sure that on these cool autumn (soon to be cold winter) evenings their efforts are greatly appreciated. These coaching sessions finish no later than 5pm; however, I am aware that there are occasions where boys are not picked-up until much later. It should be realised that many coaches feel a strong obligation to remain with the younger boys until collected and have, on occasion, waited at school until near 6pm. While realising that the unexpected can occur, I ask that all parents please collect boys at the time training concludes. A Timely Reminder Before Photos I think a few boys have decided to use their own hair to keep themselves warm during winter. However, may I please remind all families of the following requirements as printed in the Marist College Canberra Junior School Parent Handbook. Hair should be neat, tidy, above the collar, of natural colour, of even grade and all extremes avoided. Year 6 Camp I take this opportunity to thank the staff who attended camp last week. Mrs Maree Rolfe, Mrs Michele Izzard, Mrs Katherine Dickson, Mrs Gabi Nulley, Mr Laurie Hicks and Mr Michael Lloyd all gave of their time so the boys could experience the enjoyment and challenges of their final Junior School camp.
