DESCRIPTION<br />

Formerly the site <strong>of</strong> an unattractive 3 story parking garage, Post Office Square is now<br />

home to a beautiful, green 1.7 acre street level park as well as a 7 level underground<br />

parking garage in the center <strong>of</strong> Boston’s financial district.<br />

Date opened:<br />

Friends <strong>of</strong> Post Office Square <strong>for</strong>med 1983; Construction started in October 1988;<br />

Completed: Garage—October 1990, <strong>Park</strong>—Summer 1991.<br />

Features:<br />

Sculptural fountain; landscaping (trees, bushes and flowers)—several species on<br />

permanent loan from the Arnold Arboretum; park pavilion; two gazebo-like structures:<br />

one holds a café, the other serves as the escalator entranceway to the garage; benches,<br />

sitting walls.<br />

Garage: supplies 30% <strong>of</strong> area’s parking and is now a $12 million business.<br />

1.7 acres plus 7 floors (or 519,057 sq. ft) <strong>of</strong> parking<br />

PARTNERS/GOVERNING BODY<br />

The park and garage at Post Office Square represent a public/private venture between<br />

Friends <strong>of</strong> Post Office Square Inc. (a <strong>for</strong>-pr<strong>of</strong>it development company/civic corporation/”<br />

limited dividend corporation”) made up <strong>of</strong> 20 Boston firms and individuals, and the <strong>City</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Boston.<br />

• Independent board: Bill McCall, Norman Leventhal, Ed Sidman, Jim Young, Ed<br />

Johnson, John Hamill, Ron Drucker. (Complete list TBA)<br />

• Pr<strong>of</strong>its from the garage are donated to the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Boston and its <strong>Park</strong> Trust Fund<br />

<strong>for</strong> the maintenance <strong>of</strong> the city’s neighborhood parks (there<strong>for</strong>e Friends is “nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

by agreement, but <strong>for</strong>-pr<strong>of</strong>it by law.” – Weinberg)<br />
