1 Standard drink
In the united states, a
standard drink is any
drink that has 1/2 ounce
of pure alcohol
The liver can, on average, metabolize
about one standard drink in one hour.
Consuming more than
one standard
drink/hour = intoxication
Practice low-risk
drinking
What’s a
Drink?

What’s a Drink...
and why do you need to know?
Most people who drink DON’T plan to:
Get sick
Get hurt or hurt someone else
Embarrass themselves
Have a hangover the next day
These can happen when people don’t
make smart choices about drinking.
12 fl. oz
regular beer
About 5%
alcohol
22 oz beer=2
drinks
40 oz beer=3
drinks
8-9 fl. oz
malt liquor
About 7%
alcohol
5 fl. oz
table wine
About 12%
alcohol
25 oz bottle of
12% wine = 5
drinks
To avoid problems from drinking, you should...
Never drink and drive
Not drink if you’re using drugs or taking other medications.
(Ask your doctor for guidance about medications.)
Not drink if you’re upset, anxious or angry.
Not drink if you might need to make decisions
about sex.
Not drink if you’re pregnant, or think you might be.
1.5 fl. oz
shot of 90proof
spirits
(hard liquor,
whiskey, gin, rum,
vodka, tequila, etc.)
About 40%
alcohol
12 fl. oz
mixed drink
?
Alcohol
content
varies
Mixed drinks can
fool you
You can’t tell by looking how many shots
are in a mixed drink.
Some mixed drinks can equal 1-3 drinks
or more.
Only accept a drink if you know what’s in
it.
Don’t set your drink down where you
can’t see it.
Bring your own drink or make it yourself
if you can.
The drink on the left counts as 1 drink.
The drink on the right counts as 4 drinks.
1 shot of alcohol 4 shots of alcohol
Can you tell the difference?
More liquor counts as more
drinks:
A pint = 11 drinks
A fifth = 17 drinks
1.75 liter = 39 drinks
