hard Strauss, taken on his 85th birthday
Richard Strauss
On September 8, 1949, Richard Strauss died at his home in Bavaria, a titan among
composers of this century. His music, a life work of vast dimensions and decisive
importance, stands far above the struggle of two generations for new styles and new
forms of expression. At 85, his creative power remained unbroken, and the last works,
written in a style of complete serenity and detachment, join the long list of renowned
masterpieces of his earlier periods.
More than the honor and recognition paid to him in his lifetime, however, the final
tribute to his memory is the world's devotion to his music. The beloved operas, symphonic
poems and lieder of Richard Strauss, known and performed on opera and concert stages
throughout the world, have become the inalienable property of mankind.
ERNEST NEWMAN
The definitive treatment, by the foremost authority on
Wagner, of the ten most famous operas and music dramas
of that great composer: The Flying Dutchman, Tannhduser,
Lohengrin, Tristan and Isolde, The Mastersingers
of Nuremberg, the four operas of The Nibelung's Ring,
and Parsifal.
Here are the sources from which Wagner derived and
constructed these operas; material from his prose sketches
that allow you to see these works as nearly as possible as
he saw them; the characters of each opera; a pertinent
history of their performances; some of their principal
performers; and an almost passage by passage correlation
HARMONICE MUSICES ODHECATON: A. Edited by Helen
M. Hewitt (with literary texts edited by Isabel Pope). A thorough
study of the first large collection of part-music to assume printed
form. Includes transcriptions of the 96 compositions collected in
Petrucci's edition of 1501, with notes, variants, concordance, analyses,
etc. Printed by photo-offset. New Edition. Pp. vii, 421. ($8). ,
"Helen Hewitt's edition of the Odhccaton is a most impressive and thorough
production—one of which American musical scholarship may well be proud. ... Of
real importance is Miss Hewitt's "Analysis of the Musical Texts". This is an
excellent piece of work, practically a short treatise on the forms used in late 15thcentury
secular music' (Gustave Reese)
THE NOTATION OF POLYPHONIC MUSIC. By Willi Apel.
This book is temporarily out of print. Dr. Apel is preparing a
fourth edition which will probably be published in June 1949.
The splendidly printed volume with its wealth of facsimile reproductions and
transcriptions is bound to be indispensable to all serious students of mediaeval
music, as it opens to them the direct access to the primary sources, the mediaeval
manuscripts and early prints of the sixteenth century.' (Hugo Leichtetltritt)
'May I express my profound admiration for Dr. Apel's book on the notation of
polyphonic music? . . . The need for such a work in English has long been recognized
and Dr. Apel has met this need in a practical and scholarly way.'
(Archibald T. Davison)
SPECULUM, published quarterly by the Mediaeval Academy,
contains articles and reviews by leading musicologists concerned
with music in the Middle Ages. {Annual subscription $6.)
Attention is called to the illustrated
article by Willi Apel on 'Early History
Beethoven Letters in America
Facsimiles, Transcriptions and Translations
together with Illuminating Critical and Historical Commentaries
By O. G. SONNECK
Cloth, 4to, 242 pages; Price, net $10.00
Published in February, 1927, under the auspices of the Beethoven Association as a contribution
to the Beethoven Centenary. Now a publication of the New York Public Library.
This sumptuous book contains facsimiles of thirty-five Beethoven Letters owned by
Americans. The facsimiles are followed by transcripts and translations of the original
text of the letters and each letter is then placed in its biographical frame by the author,
whose conclusions often deviate from those of other Beethoven biographers.
The text (xxix, 213 pages) gives many intimate glimpses into Beethoven's life and
career and the facsimiles afford a fascinating opportunity to decipher Beethoven's epistolary
hieroglyphics.
Facsimile reproduction of the
Complete Original Manuscript
Beethoven's Sonata Appassionata
One thousand copies were printed of this limited de luxe edition. Five hundred
copies were set aside for sale in America. The Beethoven Association acquired the entire
American allotment and has turned over to the New York Public Library the small supply
of copies not previously sold by it.
The facsimile, prepared and printed by Mr. H. Piazza, L'Edition d'Art, Paris, is an
extraordinary piece of reproduction. It duplicates faithfully every characteristic pen-stroke
of the master, every alteration and finger-mark.
