AARON COPLAND
RECENT ADDITIONS TO THE BOOSEY & HAWKES CATALOGUE
Four Early Songs - a fascinating insight into the musical thoughts of the young
Copland. Written when he was eighteen years old, the first three songs are settings
of poems by Aaron Schaffer, who described the music as having "sudden changes
of key and occasional discords a la Debussy and Ravel". The fourth song, Alone,
was written some years later (1922) while Copland was studying with Nadia
Boulanger in Paris.
8605 Four Early Songs (Voice and Piano) £ 3.75
Movement for String Quartet - also from the Boulanger years. This pocket score of
the 4''2 minute work includes a helpful and informative introduction by its
dedicatee Vivian Perlis, together with editorial suggestions by the Alexander
String Quartet who gave the world premiere in October 1984.
8774 Movement for String Quartet (HPS 1126) £ 3.50
Ceremonial Music - a useful new pocket score containing some of Copland's best
known music commissioned for special occasions: titles include Fanfare for the
Common Man (1942), Jubilee Variation (1945), Preamble for a Solemn Occasion (1949),
Ceremonial Fanfare (1969) and Inaugural Fanfare (1969).
8773 Ceremonial Music (HPS 1125) £ 7.95
Sonata for Clarinet and Piano - a transcription of the Sonata for Violin and Piano
of 1942-43 which Copland wrote in memory of his friend Harry H. Dunham who
was killed in action in the South Pacific in 1943. The original work has here been
transposed down a major third to exploit the clarinet's rich chalumeau register.
Popular Entertainment and the
Circle of Eric Satie
NANCY PERLOFF,
University of California, Los Angeles
This book examines the early twentiethcentury
movement that was sparked by the
premiere of Erik Satie's ballet Parade in May
1917. Perloff argues that Satie and his colleagues,
including Darius Millhaud, Max
Jacob, and Jean Cocteau, led French music
away from Impressionism by infusing their
compositions with French and American
popular idioms.
Euryanthe and Carl Maria
von Weber's Dramaturgy of
German Opera
MICHAEL C.TUSA,
University of Texas, Austin
In this book, Tusa provides the first fulllength
study of Euryanthe ever made and
firmly stakes out the claim that it is
"arguably the key work for understanding
Weber's operatic aims." Along with close
scrutiny of its dramatic aims and compositional
planning, Tusa provides insight into
its genre and reception history. The result
is a book that not only deepens our understanding
of a major neglected work but
may help to restore it to its true place in the
history of romantic opera.
The Concept of Music
ROBIN MACONIE
What is music for? How does it work? What
can it teach us? In this brilliant and thoughtprovoking
book Maconie seeks the answers
to these and other fundamental questions
about music, integrating music and appropriate
scientific research in a new evaluation
of his topic. In so doing, he argues
passionately for a reappraisal of music, not
as mere entertainment, but as something
basic to our experience of listening and
communicating in sound, and an art which
has exerted a profound influence on society.
Gesualdo Second Edition
The Man and His Music
GLENN WATKINS,
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, is equally
celebrated as the composer of madrigals of
great power and tortured complexity and
as the murderer of his wife and her lover in
flagrante delicto. His neurotic sensibility found
an ideal outlet in the mannerist tendencies
of late Renaissance music, and his works
are the most extreme examples of those
tendencies. Alongside detailed analysis of
Gesualdo's remarkable madrigals and of
the few works in other genres. This book
contains much new biographical material,
particularly on the latter part of the
composer's life.
THE CHARLES IVES TUNEBOOK
by Clayton W. Henderson
The purpose of the Tunebook is to preserve in one
source book those tunes that Ives quoted extensively
throughout his creative life. Since he was primarily
interested in the melody of his sources, that is
the only music element usually given, with every
effort made to provide the models as Ives probably
knew them.
