Welcome to our spring yearling bull sale where we will offer our February and March born bulls. We would like to say 

thank you in advance to the many friends and customers for your support over the years. We are a family operation and go 

to work everyday raising cattle just like you do. Our one main goal and passion in this business is to have the most profitable 

bull customers in the industry, with the least stress and time consuming management problems of all. The challenges and 

changes these last couple of years have seemed to be abundant, however there have also been many rewards available 

in the market place through feeder and fed prices and ultimately the willingness of the consumer to pay a little more for 

a great product. It certainly seems like a time to be confident and optimistic about the future of the cow/calf business. 

Change and progress start through sire selection and besides the normal everyday selection traits like birth weights, 

weaning weights, EPDs and etc., it’s often the not easily seen traits that make the biggest difference to the bottom line. 

Like having a sire with a three or four day shorter gestation length so a higher growth calf can be born earlier, lighter and 

more vigorous. Quality--is freedom of faults and that equals premiums in extra dollars per pound. Just in this past year 

we have seen carcass premiums on Schurrtop sired cattle from $50 to $177 per head; and whether you retain ownership 

of your calves or not, someone does. Efficiency--this is the big one--selecting genetics that perform at the same or higher 

level, while consuming less grass and feed, turns into more cows on less acres and less feed per head in the feed yard. With 

today’s prices there can easily be in excess of $200 per pair difference in cost of production in a year. Better efficiency is 

kind of like that neighbor down the road that seems to have things a little newer and a little easier; and more than likely 

some of it’s because of efficiency differences in their operation. Our goal is to have you become that neighbor, if you’re 

not already. 

I’ve mentioned just a few of the sight unseen things that make a difference not excluding fertility, doability, muscle 

and udder and feet and leg quality, etc. When you add it all up, the difference in net return per head is staggering. This 

is why we have been efficiency testing for over 25 years, with many of our sires being proven low Residual Feed Intake 

efficiency leaders. We have been carcass testing for over 40 years. This is all bred in throughout our cow herd. We have a 

zero tolerance for time consuming management problems including disposition, mothering ability, bad udders, etc. You can 

select genetics here with confidence--they are free of bred in problems. There are lots of choices in this industry. We want 

your family and operation to thrive and know you can buy from the first to the last bull in this offering with confidence.

by the buyer to have a professional semen evaluation by an evaluator of 

Schurrtop’s choice. 

This guarantee does not include mortality, a life threatening injury, freeze 

damage due to winter elements, or mismanagement. We will not replace a 

dead animal if it is killed or has to be humanely destroyed for any reason.

CHAROLAIS LOTS: We have inspected all of the polled bulls to see if they 

are smooth polled or polled/scurred and this information is reported on 

each lot. However, Schurrtop cannot guarantee that a smooth polled bull 

will not develop scurs at a later date. 

CARCASS ULTRASOUND INFORMATION: We will measure the bulls using 

ultrasound for carcass traits and this information will be available sale day, if 

available. UltraInsights Certified Lab was used to interpret both the Angus 

and Charolais scans. 

UPDATED INFORMATION: Scrotal measurements and final weights will be 

provided sale day, if available. Announcements during the sale will supersede 

information presented in this catalog. 

PERFORMANCE INFORMATION: The EPDs on the sale cattle are from the 

Spring of 2013. The EPDs in the catalog are the most current available and 

will be more current than what will be on your registration paper if you do 

not ask for your papers to be transferred to you. 

REGISTRATION TRANSFER: If you would like your registration papers 

transferred to you, please notify the clerk at time of settlement. Please leave 

your membership number with the clerk on the settlement sheet. 

HERD HEALTH: All bulls are vaccinated for IBR, BRSV, P13, BVD, 7-Way 

- haemophilus and are poured with Ivomec. They will have proper health 

papers for interstate shipment sale day except for Colorado buyers. Due to 

recently adopted more stringent state health requirements, it will take 3 plus 

days to run the extra tests necessary. 

Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) and (NH)—all cattle with known descendants 

that are carriers of the AM or NH gene have been tested free of the defect. 

SALE ORDER: We will start the sale with approximately one-half of the Angus 

bulls followed by the Charolais bulls and so on. The bulls are cataloged in 

no particular order.

Business was our $31,000 choice, the number one feed efficiency bull at -5.63 Residual Feed Intake and the biggest ribeye 

bull that sold out of over 800 bulls on test. He started out with a 60 pound birth weight and weaned at 774 from a nice uddered 

first calf dam. While on test he converted at 5.05# feed/# gain, had a 114 gain ratio, 111 yearling weight ratio and consumed 

just 15.7 pounds of dry matter feed per day. Both his sire and sire of his dam are pathfinder producers maternally and there

Reality is a proven calving ease and total performance sire from a superior uddered pathfinder female. He 

was the co-top gaining and $23,000 high selling bull of our 2004 sale. He was born at 75 pounds, weaned at 

728, ratio 111, gained 6.34 pounds per day on test and had a 1506 pound yearling weight to ratio 125. His 

ultrasound scans were equally impressive with a 16.8 adjusted ribeye, ratio 125 combined with a 4.73 marbling

An exciting sire that few can match for a spread from birth to yearling and maternal. He is a totally outcross

Explanation of Ratings on the Angus Bulls Selling 

First, I want to emphasize that every bull in this sale has met all our standards for quality and we would recommend to any 

calf or packer buyer the calves out of any bull in the sale. However, to help our customers save time sale day, and make decisions 

and improvements on non EPD traits for their herd, we have rated the bulls for three traits with H H H H H being the highest 

rating and H being the lowest between the bulls in this sale. In the past, we have used long footnotes to describe the phenotypic 

differences in the bulls and we think this system is more comprehensive. These rankings are generally to measure where these 

bulls rate within our herd; but they’re also compared to Angus bulls across the Angus breed in general. i.e. One person may want 

to emphasize calving ease where as another person may need improvement in frame.

Explanation of Ratings on the Charolais Bulls Selling 

First, I want to emphasize that every bull in this sale has met all our standards for quality and we would recommend to any 

calf or packer buyer the calves out of any bull in the sale. However, to help our customers save time sale day, and make decisions 

and improvements on non EPD traits for their herd, we have rated the bulls for traits with H H H H H being the highest 

rating and H being the lowest between the bulls in this sale. In the past, we have used long footnotes to describe the phenotypic 

differences in the bulls and we think this system is more comprehensive. These rankings are generally to measure where these 

bulls rate within our herd but they’re also compared to Charolais bulls across the Charolais breed in general. i.e. One person 

may want to emphasize muscle where as another person may need improvement in frame. 

MUS = Muscle Score. Based off of the USDA feeder calf muscle score. A visual score of muscling through to forearm, top, rump and quarter

Insurance 

The insurance companies that we have worked with the last few years have discontinued “loss of use” coverage. 

With the reality that sometimes young bulls become injured during their first breeding season, we have worked to come 

up with a fair and reasonable way to share the risk with our bull customers. With customers that wanted the “loss of use” 

insurance we shared one-half the premium cost for coverage on the bulls to lower your risk. We have decided to continue 

sharing one-half the risk during this transitional period with the breeding guarantee described below. 

Mortality insurance will still be available sale day through American Livestock Insurance Company. 

First Year Breeding, Loss Of Use Coverage 

All bulls selling for $3000 or more will be covered 50% by Schurrtop Angus & Charolais if they are injured during 

their first season and not able to return to service. Season is defined as: Upon delivery through the 60-day period following 

the first turnout of the bulls. 

50% of the value of the injured bull, minus salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement 

bull if one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should 

injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 1, 2013. 

Example 1: A $5,000 bull is injured, a credit of $2,500 minus salvage value will be given to the buyer. 

Example 2: A $4,000 bull is injured, a credit of $2,000 minus salvage value will be given to the buyer.
