DEFINITIONS<br />

POSITIONAL Specialist role at set phase and in phase play.<br />

SYSTEM Understanding/execution of the defensive system from set phase and phase play, and your role in it.<br />

ALIGNMENT Quick realignment and spacing based on your body type/speed/defensive role. Maintain integrity of line.<br />

TACKLE Tracking. Tackle effectiveness (impact/soak tackle). Tackle count. Missed tackles. Aggression in contact. ball/jackal.<br />

TACKLE CONTEST Ability to slow down attacking ball i.e. Balls Over Ball<br />

KICK CHASE Understanding and execution of your role. Quick alignment, spacing, communication.<br />

WORK RATE Ability to recycle yourself quickly after making a tackle. Eager to make a difference in defense.<br />

PHYSICAL Physicality, power, speed, aggression. Fitness and functional strength.<br />

MENTAL Discipline, team player, attitude, leadership, toughness, work ethic, Law IQ, rug<strong>by</strong> IQ.<br />

TACTICAL Understanding/ awareness of where we are on the field, what parts of the field we want to play in, and how to get there.<br />

CATCH & PASS Passing, pass selection, timing, accuracy and consistency. Ability to fluidly catch & pass in one motion.<br />

STRIKE RUNNING Lines of running, pace onto ball, ability to break the gain-line, and buy vital time <strong>by</strong> staying on your feet.<br />

EVASIVE RUNNING Footwork and evasion skills to be an elusive runner. Create and preserve space to unbalance a defender.<br />

BALL RETENTION Ball protection/retention in contact. "Score the try" when going to ground. Safe ball presentation.<br />

TACKLE CONTEST Identify and clean out threats. Selection and execution of correct "clean out" techniques. One Bullet, one shot, one kill.<br />

SUPPORT PLAY Running off the ball. Inside and outside support of ball carrier i.e. Eagerness to be involved as a support player.<br />

KICK Selection/execution of correct kick type to 1.) relieve pressure or 2.) gain territory.<br />

COUNTER ATTACK Quick transition from defensive alignment to attack from a turnover. Ability to see the space and move the ball effectively.<br />

WORK RATE Ability to recycle yourself quickly after being involved in a strike. Eager to make a difference in attack/attack support.<br />

PHYSICAL Physicality, power, speed, aggression. Fitness and functional strength.<br />
