On the fly leaf Malone has written a list <strong>of</strong> the contents <strong>of</strong><br />

the volume, on which Tarltons Newes Out <strong>of</strong> Purgatorie is the<br />

second item:<br />

After f in f a date (which looks like 1591) has been scratched<br />

<strong>out</strong> and a line drawn over the mark. There are ten items in<br />

the volume, and at the end <strong>of</strong> the list is written,<br />

On these pieces Shakspeare founded the following<br />

plays - As You Like It - [The Mer crossed <strong>out</strong>] -<br />

one incident in the Merry Wives <strong>of</strong> Windsor - The<br />

Winter's Tale - The Taming <strong>of</strong> the Shrew - King<br />

John - 2pts <strong>of</strong> Henry IV & Henry V - Measure for<br />

Measure - Comedy <strong>of</strong> Errors - King Lear - Romeo<br />

and Juliet. E.M.<br />

On the title page <strong>of</strong> the copy <strong>of</strong> Tarltons Newes Out <strong>of</strong><br />

Purgatorie Malone has added '<strong>1590</strong>' after the word 'White 1 on<br />

the last line. On the verso <strong>of</strong> the title page he has written,<br />

Books. 26 Jun. <strong>1590</strong> Thomas Gubbins - Thomas<br />

Newman - Allowed unto them for their copie<br />

under the hand <strong>of</strong> the Bishop <strong>of</strong> London and<br />

both the Wardens <strong>Tarlton's</strong> "Newes <strong>out</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Purgatorie or a Casket full <strong>of</strong> pleasaunt<br />

conceipts stuffed with delightful devises<br />

and quainte myrthe as his humours may afforde<br />

to feede gentlemen's fancies"<br />

This piece was therefore probably published<br />

in <strong>1590</strong>; and was entered by Gubbins & Newman<br />

for Edw. White - In like manner Elizabetha<br />

Triumphans was printed in 1588 by Gubbins &<br />
