that his experiences, his conquests and spiritual transformations,<br />

so long as <strong>the</strong>y still rema<strong>in</strong> " his ", must be conquered and<br />

transformed aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong> until everyth<strong>in</strong>g " his " is annihilated.<br />

Only <strong>in</strong> this way can he atta<strong>in</strong> a basis for experiences which, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> "all−embrac<strong>in</strong>g Truth" rouse him to a life that is no longer<br />

his everyday, personal life. He lives, but what lives is no longer<br />

himself.<br />

From this standpo<strong>in</strong>t we can understand why <strong>the</strong> <strong>Zen</strong> adept<br />

shuns all talk <strong>of</strong> himself and his progress. Not because he th<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

it immodest to talk, but because he regards it as a betrayal <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Zen</strong>. Even to make up his m<strong>in</strong>d to say anyth<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>Zen</strong> itself<br />

costs him grave heart−search<strong>in</strong>gs. He has before him <strong>the</strong> warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

example <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest Masters, who, on be<strong>in</strong>g asked<br />

what <strong>Zen</strong> was, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed an unmov<strong>in</strong>g silence, as though he<br />

had not heard <strong>the</strong> question. How <strong>the</strong>n could any adept feel<br />

tempted to render an account <strong>of</strong> what he has thrown away and<br />

no longer misses?<br />

In <strong>the</strong>se circumstances, I should be shirk<strong>in</strong>g my<br />

responsibilities if I conf<strong>in</strong>ed myself to a str<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> paradoxes and<br />

took refuge beh<strong>in</strong>d a barrage <strong>of</strong> high−sound<strong>in</strong>g words. For it was<br />

my <strong>in</strong>tention to throw light on <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>Zen</strong> as it affects one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts upon which it has set its stamp. This light is certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

not illum<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense fundamental to <strong>Zen</strong>, but at least<br />

shows that <strong>the</strong>re must be someth<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> impenetrable<br />

walls <strong>of</strong> mist, and which, like summer lightn<strong>in</strong>g, heralds <strong>the</strong><br />

distant storm. So understood, <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> archery is ra<strong>the</strong>r like a<br />

preparatory school for <strong>Zen</strong>, for it enables <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>ner to ga<strong>in</strong> a<br />

clearer view, through <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> his own hands, <strong>of</strong> events<br />

which are not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong>telligible. Objectively speak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

it would be entirely possible to make one’s way to <strong>Zen</strong> from any<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts I have named.<br />

However, I th<strong>in</strong>k I can achieve my aim most effectively by<br />

describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course which a pupil <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> archery has to<br />

complete. To be more precise, I shall try to summarize <strong>the</strong><br />

six−year course <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>struction I received from one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest<br />

Masters <strong>of</strong> this art dur<strong>in</strong>g my stay <strong>in</strong> Japan. So it is my own<br />

experiences which authorize me <strong>in</strong> this undertak<strong>in</strong>g. In order to<br />

make myself <strong>in</strong>telligible at all ˙ for even this preparatory school
