not burst open like <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> a ripe fruit. "<br />

I had to admit to <strong>the</strong> Master that this <strong>in</strong>terpretation made me<br />

more confused than ever. " For ultimately ", I said, " I draw <strong>the</strong><br />

bow and loose <strong>the</strong> shot <strong>in</strong> order to hit <strong>the</strong> target. The draw<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

thus a means to an end, and I cannot lose sight <strong>of</strong> this<br />

connection. The child knows noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this, but for me <strong>the</strong> two<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs cannot be disconnected. "<br />

"The right art ", cried <strong>the</strong> Master, `is purposeless, aimless!<br />

The more obst<strong>in</strong>ately you try to learn how to shoot <strong>the</strong> arrow for<br />

<strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> hitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> goal, <strong>the</strong> less you will succeed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> one<br />

and <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r will recede. What stands <strong>in</strong> your way is<br />

that you have a much too wilful will. You th<strong>in</strong>k that what you<br />

do not do yourself does not happen. "<br />

" But you yourself have told me <strong>of</strong>ten enough that archery is<br />

not a pastime, not a purposeless game, but a matter <strong>of</strong> life and<br />

death! "<br />

" I stand by that. We master archers say: one shot˙one life!<br />

What this means, you cannot yet understand. But perhaps<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r image will help you, which expresses <strong>the</strong> same<br />

experience. We master archers say: with <strong>the</strong> upper end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bow <strong>the</strong> archer pierces <strong>the</strong> sky, on <strong>the</strong> lower end, as though<br />

attached by a thread, hangs <strong>the</strong> earth. If <strong>the</strong> shot is loosed with a<br />

jerk <strong>the</strong>re is a danger <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thread snapp<strong>in</strong>g. For purposeful and<br />

violent people <strong>the</strong> rift becomes f<strong>in</strong>al, and <strong>the</strong>y are left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

awful centre between heaven and earth. "<br />

" What must I do, <strong>the</strong>n? " I asked thoughtfully.<br />

" You must learn to wait properly. "<br />

" And how does one learn that? "<br />

" By lett<strong>in</strong>g go <strong>of</strong> yourself, leav<strong>in</strong>g yourself and everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

yours beh<strong>in</strong>d you so decisively that noth<strong>in</strong>g more is left <strong>of</strong> you<br />

but a purposeless tension. "<br />

" So I must become purposeless˙on purpose? " I heard<br />

myself say.<br />

" No pupil has ever asked me that, so I don’t know <strong>the</strong> right<br />

answer. "<br />

" And when do we beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se new exercises? "<br />

" Wait until it is time. "
