TREE PLANTING IN SUTTON
A huge thank you to all who braved the cold
weather in late November to help plant nearly
2000 trees and low ground cover on the Sutton
recreation ground. The project, organised by Peter
Lee, was attended by Councillor Marco Cereste.
This was a ground breaking event (!) with over 50
people lending their support, including a group of
“tree huggers” from IKEA. Sutton villagers turned
out in force with a huge amount of help from
Castor, Ailsworth and Helpston throughout the
day, which was very much appreciated.
The children were also amazing,
helping with the planting, many
marking their “favourite” tree so they
can watch it grow over the coming
years. It was a great day even though
it was wet and muddy and we could
not have done it without the “girls”
(Sarah and Delia) in the Church,
providing much needed hot drinks
and cakes. The Church came into its
own again serving as a main focal
point for the village community and
visitors. A huge thank you to all who
provided the mountain of cakes and biscuits on the day to keep the planters planting!!!!!!
Our thanks again to all... you know who you are!
Sutton villagers participated in a huge tree planting programme, with lots of help from friends
in Castor and Ailsworth, on our recreation ground. All kinds of trees were planted and even
Councillor Marco Cereste came to pitch in and help. We were given Oak, Birch, Lime and lots
of other smaller trees but we had to dig a hole for each tree which was hard work. Mummy
was in the Church if we got hungry and tired or just needed a boost and she made teas and
served cakes which people brought in to Church. We had a brilliant time and planted about
1,200 trees. We had to put a plastic protector around each tree and push a stake into the
ground to support the tree. We had help from IKEA because they love trees and Joseph and
Jessica from PACT who gave us the trees. We have to look after them and hope they grow
because the Rec looks much better now and there will be more places for birds and other
animals to make their homes.
