Dear Friends,
Shalom & Shanah Tovah!
Welcome to the High Holy Days at Congregation B’nai Amoona! These Yamim Noraim (High Holy
Days) begin with our spiritually moving Selichot Service Saturday night, September 24, and
culminate with our uplifting celebration on Simchat Torah, October 21, take a great deal of
preparation and much thoughtful planning. We are especially proud of the wide range of Services
and activities available for everyone.
While Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur provide us with an opportunity for intense introspection and
heartfelt worship, there are a myriad of programs which may interest you over these Days of Awe.
Please take a few moments to read through the enclosed material as it provides a concise picture of
what is going on at Shul over these exciting weeks.
As we come together in prayer, we do so as a Mishpachah (family) – reconnecting with one another,
sharing our joys and sorrows from the past year and looking forward to the coming year. One of the
most beautiful aspects of the High Holy Days is having the opportunity to begin life anew, opening
our hearts to new friends, our minds to new ideas, and our souls to new experiences. It is in this
spirit, that we are also delighted to once again be turning to our High Holy Day Machzor (prayer
book), Mahzor Lev Shalem. We are confident that this beautiful prayer book will help deepen and
enhance our communal worship.
We are truly blessed to be able to share meaningful, inspiring and enjoyable Services with our B’nai
Amoona family during these Holy and Sacred days. We invite each of you to join us and share in
these precious moments. Let us once again, together, commit ourselves to a spirited and spiritual
High Holy Day season.
With blessings for Chayim (life), Shalom (peace), Briyut (health) and Ahavah (love) in the New Year,
God in All Moments:
Mystical & Practical Spiritual Wisdom from Hasidic Masters
By Rabbi Or N. Rose
Mystical and practical wisdom—for daily life!
The least known of the Hasidic masters’ teachings—the Hanhagot, or “spiritual
practices”—are at the heart of this book. These short lists of instructions were created for
their followers, inspirational treasures intended to be carried at all times. They were to
be read again and again—providing spiritual guidance, centering, and aid in bringing
joy and God’s presence into daily life. Practical, personal, and wise, these brief teachings
range from straightforward instructions to visualization exercises, meditations, and
mantras.
Rabbi Or N. Rose
Rabbi Or Rose is Associate Dean: Director of Informal Education at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College,
and Co-Director of CIRCLE: the Center for Inter-Religious & Communal Leadership Education, a joint venture of
Hebrew College and Andover Newton Theological School. He is also a member of the Shalom Hartman
Institute’s North American Scholar’s Circle. Rabbi Rose is the co-editor of Righteous Indignation: A Jewish Call
for Justice and Jewish Mysticism and the Spiritual Life: Classical Texts, Contemporary Reflections, and youngest
brother of our own Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose.
Available in the Judaica Shop
Discounted price $15.00
(suggested retail $16.95)
Rabbi Or Rose will serve as our Jick Family Kallah Scholar-In-Residence, September 23 & 24, 2011
Operation Isaiah ~ A High Holy Day Food Drive
The prophet Isaiah once said:
This is My chosen fast…
To share your bread with the hungry,
To take the homeless into your home,
To clothe the naked when you see them.
(Isaiah 58:6-7)
On Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur, as we gather together in prayer,
we ask each member of our Congeregational family to bring food to our Synagogue.
Trader Joe’s has supplied us with shopping bags for you to take home and fill.
This food will be distributed to the needy through
The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry.
Our goal is to FILL THE BIMAH with food!
Tashlich Service
and Shofar Band
Rosh Hashanah I – Thursday, September 29, 2011
5:00 pm - Tober Lobby
Please meet us for our annual Tashlich Service in our Tober Lobby and we will walk
together to the Broadview Farm Lake at Mason and Conway, where we will symbolically
cast off our sins. We will then enjoy some delicious Rosh Hashanah refreshments just before
Minchah & Ma’ariv Services, as we usher in the second day of the New Year.
The Tashlich Service is based on a phrase from the Prophetic Book of Micha (7:19): “You will
cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” As the author Francine Klagsburn suggests in
her book Jewish Days, Tashlich is a unique ritual. “The flowing waters signify washing away
those sins. But on a deeper level, the waters represent the essence of the miracle of Creation
celebrated on Rosh Hashanah. From out of the waters that filled the cosmos, God separated
light from dark and heaven from earth, Scripture tells us. Later, the waters came together
again to flood the land and destroy its inhabitants except for Noah and
those he saved. When those waters receded, the world seemed to be
created anew, with a promise from God that never again would it be
destroyed. The waters of Rosh Hashanah symbolize the Creation of the
world and its new beginning, a creation and beginning that are
commemorated and reenacted each year.”
Shofar Band
Tashlich is an especially poignant ritual for children. Please make every
effort to bring them with you so they can experience the profundity of
this ancient ritual. Don’t forget to bring your bread or breadcrumbs!
A Moment of Intimacy with the Divine
Yom Kippur Neilah Ark Ceremony
A Unique Opportunity…NOT TO BE MISSED
Shabbat, October 8, 4:45 pm
11
Neilah Services
Torah is a gift from God to the People Israel. In Synagogue Sanctuaries, the place we keep this powerful
gift is the Aron HaKodesh, the Holy Ark. While Judaism does not distinguish one place as being “more
holy” or “closer” to God than any other, there is a communal sense that the Aron HaKodesh represents a
spiritual space and an opportunity for drawing nearer to the Almighty. This year, once again, we invite
the Congregation to participate in a special opportunity for personal prayer before the Aron HaKodesh.
During the Neilah service of Yom Kippur, on Shabbat, October 8, at approximately 4:45 pm, you are
invited as individuals, or as families, to come onto the Bimah and stand for a brief moment before the
open Ark in personal, silent prayer. Because of the wonderful, enthusiastic and overwhelming response
to this opportunity in past years, we kindly request that you be considerate of others in the length of
time you stand before the Ark so we can include all who wish to participate.
As a reminder, at the conclusion of Neilah, we will Daven Ma’ariv and then invite all of our children to
the Bimah to participate in a special ceremony before the final Shofar blasts. (We have special gifts for
our youngest members!)
May you be inscribed in the Book of Life!
Congregational Break-the-Fast – compliments of BAUSY
After the sounding of the final Shofar blasts, BAUSY (B’nai Amoona United Synagogue Youth) invites
everyone to the glass link to break-the-fast with lemonade, cake and other “noshables”. BAUSY is proud
to continue this tradition for our B’nai Amoona family. We appreciate all your support throughout the
year and look forward to a healthy, happy and sweet new year together!
26 2011 High Holy Days Bulletin

For centuries, blessing the Lulav and Etrog has
been the Jewish way of thanking God for the blessings of
the earth on the holiday of Sukkot. By holding the four
species together, we symbolically “get our own act
together” for the New Year. By pointing them in six
directions, we remind ourselves that God’s presence can
be found in every area of our lives. And by shaking the
Lulav and Etrog vigorously, we commit to being movers
and shakers in the world, for good and for blessing.
First take the branch of a Lulav (palm). On the right
side, attach 3 Hadasim (Myrtle branches). On the left,
place 2 Aravot (willows). Now hold them together with a
bright yellow Etrog and give them a good shake.
