The challenging market condition adversely impacted the<br />
tourism industry during the year. Despite this, <strong>Boustead</strong><br />
Travel Services Sdn Bhd achieved a satisfactory profit. The<br />
focus was primarily on providing quality customer service to<br />
c o r p o r a t e a n d l e i s u r e t r a v e l l e r s b y m a n a g i n g<br />
the needs of the clients with a wide range of products<br />
and services.<br />
The economic downturn took a direct hit on the global<br />
shipping industry. <strong>Boustead</strong> Shipping Agencies Sdn Bhd<br />
was not spared as shipping lines were badly hit by reduced<br />
volumes and low freight rates. Fewer vessels called at our<br />
Malaysian ports which affected our revenue.<br />
<strong>Boustead</strong> Information Technology Sdn Bhd ended the<br />
year with a profit from the implementation of the Plantation<br />
Information Management and Control System and the<br />
completion of the comprehensive ICT solution for The Royale<br />
Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.<br />
Asia Smart Cards Centre Sdn Bhd was profitable in spite<br />
of tough competition. The company undertook a renewal plan<br />
to penetrate into the market for personalisation of debit cards<br />
with ATM functionalities.<br />
The University of Nottingham in Malaysia Sdn Bhd<br />
(UNMC) strengthened its position as one of Malaysia’s premier<br />
education institutions with a student body of more than 3,500<br />
students. The institution continues to attract international<br />
students as 38% of the students comprise nationals from over<br />
70 countries.<br />
UNMC features a fully integrated campus ideal for the researchled<br />
university. The faculties at the Semenyih campus contribute<br />
to the broader research agenda of the university through<br />
research based in Malaysia as well as its home faculties in the<br />
United Kingdom. The university has to its credit, 21% of<br />
postgraduate students of which 178 are registered for research<br />
degrees. The year also saw the establishment of two new<br />
schools, the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and<br />
the School of Psychology.<br />
