Acknowledgments
No book is ever the work of one person. A common interest about trees, shared by
many people over the span of a decade, were involved in some way toward the creation
of this book. The idea for the book was first suggested by Michelet Fontaine in ]992.
We shared the same concern about the loss oftechnical information that so often accompanies
the termination of projects in Haiti. This attempts to address part of that concern.
I greatly appreciate the generous support, encouragement and patience of the staff
of USAID, SEClD, Auburn University, PADF, and CARE throughout the writing period.
