Junior and Senior Baseball
Junior baseball in Corner Brook is on the rebound. Last
year, the seeds for a new junior (21 and under) program
were planted and the CBBA operated a simple three
team format. This year, they hope to build on last year’s
momentum to make the league even more viable.
Beginning in mid-June, keep your eyes on the website and
the newspaper to see a junior schedule.
Senior baseball has been operating in Corner Brook since
1961. This summer will be the 51st straight season of
senior baseball in our city. The schedule will include three
teams from Corner Brook and one team from Pasadena.
New players are always welcome in our league which
usually operates from June until September. New players
are encouraged to come to the field and let coaches
know they are interested in playing senior baseball.
kayak newfoundland and labrador
If you have a kayak but lack paddling partners or you don’t
have one but would like to get started in the activity the
West Coast chapter of KNL (Kayak Newfoundland and
Labrador) could be just the thing for you.
The group usually meets on Tuesday nights starting around
mid May and extending into the fall. Sometimes its a
simple paddle on Tippings Pond in Massey Drive or a short
paddle on the Bay of Islands and other times it could be
a practice session for rescue and rolling techniques. On
nice weekends longer trips on the bay or other areas on
the west coast will be planned. Sometimes special guests
will present information sessions on kayak safety and trip
planning or show slides from various trips around the
island. We can provide you with information on buying
a kayak or on where to take a kayaking course. But mostly
its about making contacts in the kayaking world so you
have someone to go on a paddle with, whether it be an
organized group paddle or just a couple of friends getting
out on the water.
For more information contact Perry Humphries at perryski@
rick hansen 25th Anniversary
man in motion world Tour relay
Twenty-five years ago Rick Hansen had a dream – to make
the world more accessible and inclusive and to find a
cure for spinal cord injury. Inspired by a deep-seated
belief that anything is possible, Rick’s dream took shape
in the form of the Man In Motion World Tour (MIMWT).
For 26 months he and his team wheeled over 40,000 km
through 34 countries, raising awareness of the potential
of people with disabilities. It was the beginning of a
lifelong and selfless journey to make a
positive difference in the lives of others.
This year marks the beginning of the
25th Anniversary, and provides an
unprecedented opportunity to engage
the world with the story of Rick Hansen.
Moving from one Man In Motion to Many
In Motion, it is a global invitation to join
Rick in his journey towards a cure and
a more inclusive society as he inspires
a new generation to be difference
makers – to dream, to take action, to
continue to change the world.
The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay
will re-trace the Canadian segment of the original Man
In Motion World Tour. Starting in Newfoundland and
travelling westward to British Columbia, the nine-month
relay will cover 12,000 kilometers, and visit over 600
communities from coast to coast – in every province and
territory.
On Friday, September 2, 2011 the Rick Hansen Relay will
come to Corner Brook. Come join us at Margaret Bowater
Alzheimer’s walk for memories
This year the Alzheimer’s Society will be hosting the Walk
for Memories on the Corner Brook Stream Trail (Participark).
Sunday, May 29, from 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
This is a province-wide fundraising event in which
participants collect pledges to raise funds for the
Alzheimer Society and honor these pledges by
participating in our walk-a-thon. It provides hope for
people who face day-to-day challenges of the disease,
by funding research and programming for people with
Alzheimer’s, their families, and caregivers. It is a great way
to enjoy the day with family and friends, give back to the
community and promote good health.
2011 walk for AlS
Twenty two years ago, family and friends of people living
with ALS formed the ALS Society. Each year the Society
raises funds to provide services and support for people
and their families living with ALS in the province.
Volunteers across Newfoundland and Labrador have
come together to organize walks and provide you with the
opportunity to take part and get together with others who
have been affected by ALS.
Last year walks raised over $90,000!! 40% of the fundraising
is directed to ALS Canada for research and 60% stays
here in the province for our families afflicted with this
devastating disease.
for towing and disposal costs during the annual Spring
Clean up period in May. This is for residential properties
and only one (1) vehicle from a property will be towed.
The vehicles must be accessible for direct towing and
any costs associated with the winching of inaccessible
e-waste Collection
E-waste, or electronic waste, includes items such as cell
phones, computer towers, monitors, TVs, VCRs, DVD
players, etc.
E-waste contains toxic materials that can be hazardous
if not managed properly. Landfilling e-waste is harmful
to the environment because substances such as arsenic,
cadmium, lead, mercury, and nickel can leach out into the
soil and water. These substances can be toxic and have
been associated with cancer and neurological disorders
in children. Besides health reasons, recycled e-waste can
retrieve valuable parts and precious metals, such as gold
and copper. There is tremendous value in reducing, reusing,
and recycling these products when possible.
For more information on the next E-Waste Collection
please call 637-1630.
residential Curbside recycling
program
On May 30, 2005, the City of Corner Brook launched
a Mandatory Curbside Recycling Program, which
makes separating recyclable material into blue
transparent plastic bags mandatory for all city
residents. The benefits of this program include
extending the life of the Wild Cove landfill and
reducing our community’s carbon footprint.
As part of the City’s Curbside Recycling Program, there
are a number of things you can do. Place cardboard
and paper products in a see through blue bag or flatten
and tie cardboard into bundles no longer than 12 “ x
12 “ x 30”. If possible place recyclable material 1.5m
from your garbage. Corrugated cardboard is “waffled”
between the layers (e.g. appliance boxes). For a list of
accepted recyclable material please visit the city of Corner
Curb Side give Away
JuNE 11 - 12
The City of Corner Brook held its first City-wide Curbside
Give Away Weekend on October 9th & 10th, 2010. This
event embraced the initiatives taken by other communities
in an effort to rethink garbage and help residents to divert
less material to the landfill.
Residents can place re-usable items at the curb and
simply place a “FREE” sign on the items to ensure there
is no confusion. People are then encouraged to take a
look around the city at any or all areas with a “treasure.”
Treasure hunters can remove items with a “FREE” sign but
should remember to respect people’s property when
participating.
Clean up Corner Brook
Clean Up Corner Brook was initiated in 2009 and because
of the numerous groups that volunteered their time, it was
a huge success. It not only improved the appearance
of the city, it also highlighted the sense of community
spirit that exits in Corner Brook, and demonstrated the
responsibility we felt Clean Up Corner Brook hopes
to mobilize residents, community groups, businesses,
institutions and schools on the theory that many hands
make short work. Similar programs in other municipalities
have been very effective in cleaning up numerous areas
in a very short time. Everyone is encouraged to select a
particular part of town to clean up the litter. It may be a
residential road, perhaps a neighbourhood park or public
green space. If possible, the City encourages you to put
any recyclables collected in their institutional or residential
recycling containers/blue bags.
Sustainablility Awards
The City of Corner Brook, in cooperation with the Western
Star and an array of community partners including the
Western Environmental Centre, Board of Trade, Humber
Community YMCA and others, is pleased to announce the
first ever community based Sustainability Awards.
The Sustainability Awards are designed to recognize
individuals, groups, organizations and businesses in
Corner Brook for their valued contributions to creating and
strengthening a culture of sustainability in Corner Brook
through their efforts in economic, cultural, environmental
and sporting excellence. The awards will increase
community awareness, engagement and action while
celebrating those who make Corner Brook fantastic place
22
to live.
These awards have grown out of the success of the annual
Corner Brook Sport Awards, which are integral to the
newly initiated Community Sustainability Awards, and are
inclusive of the entire positive growth and development of
the City.
The Community Sustainability Awards will be presented
annually and although there is only one winner selected
for each award, it is an honor to be nominated. The
success of the Sustainability Awards process depends
upon citizen participation both as partners in moving
toward a sustainable community, and in nominating those
community members making a difference.
