Superintendent's Message
Dear Friends:
The Wethersfield school system is dedicated to the educational
welfareof this community. Education is our first and primary objective.
In making education functional it is important that character training
be included as an important phase of our educational program. You
can be the most brilliant person scholastically and yet fail in life because
you lack strong traits of good character. We hope you have received
a good educational background in this school system and that
your character is of the type that can withstand the temptations which
very often mean the difference between success and failure.
May I congratulate you and wish you the best in life in the years
to come.

VOICE OF THE PRINCIPAL
My sincerest congratulations to the 1956 graduating class. It is my
hope that with a great deal of pride. Now, more than ever before,
there is a need for educational achievement. Certainly the attainment
of a high school diploma is a major step toward that achievement.
The diploma itself is not a measuring stick of success. The student
receiving the diploma is the product that will determine how valuable
his high school education is to him. It is initiative and ambition added
to acquired knowledge that will determine success.
May all of you be an asset to the community in which you live.

STUDENT
COUNCIL
The Wethersfield Student Council is composed
of 24 members. Four officers are
elected by the students and twenty are appointed
from classes and organizations. The
Principal of the high school is the sponsor.
The Wethersfield Student Council is affiliated
with the Pekin District, The Illinois
Association and the National Association of
Student Councils.
Projects of the Student Council consist of:
Orientation of freshmen, publishing a student
handbook, student directory, sponsoring all
assemblies, operating the Sportsmanship
thermometer, Student Government day and
many others.
Sharon O'Neill conducted a discussion
group at the Pekin District Convention. Phil
Morrow served on the Constitution Committee
at the same convention. Mr. Miller, is
chairman of the executive board of the Illinois
Association of Student Councils. In
1955 Wethersfield was the host school to the
state convention. In June, Mr. Miller, will
accompany the Illinois Delegation to the
National Convention at Toledo, Ohio.

We want to express our thanks and

Wether sfield High School for their faithful
service.
The custodians spend long hours
keeping our school in top shape, the
cafeteria staff prepared excellent meals
in the cafeteria and the bus drivers
transport us to and from school safely
and efficiently. For these things we are
indeed grateful.

The WethersfieldHigh School Concert
Band has fifty five members and
plays all types of music from Be Bop
to Bach. The concert band performed
for the January PTA; the Blackhawk
Band Festival in April; and gave their
annual Spring Concert in May.
For three consecutive years this
band has won Straight Division I Ratings
in District Music competition, and
twice was advanced to the State Finals,
where it has received ratings of excellent.
The band is under the capable
direction of Mr. Charles Bickhaus.
The Wethersfield High School
Marching Band has 48 playing members.
Sherry Williams is the only
twirler and Cheryl Fuerst is drum
majorette. The marching band can

boast of having one of the finest colorguards
in this part of the state. The
band made appearances at their home
football games and the annual trip to
Macomb for Westerns' Homecoming.
The Pep Band has forty five playing
members. It is directed by Bob
Kuzminski and John Townsend who are
seniors and occassionally Mr. Bickhaus
also directs. This band played
for all the home basketball games and
for all the Pep Assemblies.
The Pep Band is composed of those
musicians who enjoy playing for the
fun of it and receive no special credit
or recognition for their efforts. Many
past band members who have graduated,
come back and sit in with the Pep
Band just for the joy of playing.

Future
Homemakers
Of America
The Future Homemakers of America,
1955-56, chose as their theme "Old and
Precious Values". In following this theme
the FHA held a Grandmothers Tea in November.
Antiques were on display and each
grandmother related an old and favorite
experience.
Other activities were enjoyed during the
year. In September was Rosebud and Blossom
Week, Dips and Sips, and Initiation.
In October a Panel discussion "Leadership"
was held. In November the group attended
Church, presented a rose to the teachers
and presented a radio skit on station WKEI.
March saw an exhibit of antique dishes and
the annual style show was held in April.
Chapter Mother elected was Mrs. Theodore
Underwood and Chapter Father was
Mr. Quinton Conner.

We think it is our duty to serve the educational needs
of all the farm people in our community. To do this
we have programs for 3 different groups,- (1) Future
Farmers now in high school (2) Young Farmers recently
graduated who are just starting out on their own and
(3) Adult Farmers.
Our high school enrollment has increased from 16 to
26 farm boys during the past 3 years. Some of the 1955
achievements of which we are proud are as follows: (1)
Our 1955hogsale, althoheld at a time of badly declining
hog prices which caused many other sales in this
vicinity to fall down badly, was one of the best we have.
This was due entirely to the very high quality of
breeding stock offered ever had. (2) In the year 1955,
our boys produced 14 litters of pigs which met the very
high standards for Production Registry. Various breed
associations have told us that they believed this was
more than any other agriculture department in the mid-

west. (3) Our program of farm shop work has been rated
the largest and best in this section of Illinois. Our boys
are truly interested in their work and they go after all
of our many activities and studies with a spirit of cooperation
and good will that makes it a pleasure to
to work with them.
Our Young Farmers classes started last year, now have
8 graduates enrolled. These boys bring back to school
many of the problems that they meet in getting started.
This part of our work is certain to grow as more boys
graduate and start farming for themselves.
Wethersfield Adult Evening School is well known as
one of the largest and best in this section. Average
attendance last year was 109. Its affairs are largely
administered by an advisory committee who bring to
Wethersfield many nationally known guest speakers
every winter.

For the first time in the history of Wethersfield,
the High School fielded a baseball team. Twenty
two boys reported to Coach Ed Green for tryouts.
Many of these candidates had gained experience
in city league play and Babe Ruth League play.
Coach Green Fielded a fine team that gave good
credit to the players and the school.

The Junior Class lavishily entertained
the Senior Class and the Faculty of the
Wethersfield High School at the Annual
Junior-Senior Banquet. This year the
Banquet was held at the Kewanee Hotel
Ballroom. Following the Banquet, the
Junior Class provided some outstanding
entertainment, a Marimba Trio, Girl's
Sextet and beautiful Hula Dancers. The
theme carried out by the Juniors was "A
Night in Hawaii".
For the climax to a delightful evening,
the Prom was held in the Ballroom.
Dancing was until midnight which closed
out a beautiful and successful event.
