<strong>HD3</strong>: <strong>The</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Spider</strong>-<strong>God</strong><br />
Part Three: <strong>The</strong> Great Fane <strong>of</strong> Zath<br />
“He had entered <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city<br />
reserved for <strong>the</strong> temples. On all sides <strong>of</strong><br />
him <strong>the</strong>y glittered white in <strong>the</strong> starlight -<br />
snowy marble pillars and golden domes<br />
and silver arches, shrines <strong>of</strong> Zamora’s<br />
myriad strange gods. He did not trouble<br />
his head about <strong>the</strong>m; he knew that<br />
Zamora’s religion, like all things <strong>of</strong> a<br />
civilized, longsettled people, was intricate<br />
and complex, and had lost most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
pristine essence in a maze <strong>of</strong> formulas and<br />
rituals. He had squatted for hours in <strong>the</strong><br />
courtyards <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> philosophers, listening to<br />
<strong>the</strong> arguments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologians and teachers,<br />
and come away in a haze <strong>of</strong> bewilderment,<br />
sure <strong>of</strong> only one thing, and that,<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y were all touched in <strong>the</strong> head.” –<br />
<strong>The</strong> Tower <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Elephant<br />
Note: <strong>The</strong> priests <strong>of</strong> Zath are able to<br />
converse with, and sometimes control,<br />
giant spiders. <strong>Spider</strong>s attacked but not<br />
totally exterminated will hasten to inform<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir masters that <strong>the</strong>re are enemies<br />
approaching.<br />

18. LESSER TEMPLE OF THE SPIDER-GOD<br />
<strong>The</strong> road nor<strong>the</strong>ast from <strong>the</strong> flying bridge<br />
which spans <strong>the</strong> river between Yezud and<br />
<strong>the</strong> nobles’ plateau leads to a broad and<br />
high gallery, 100 feet and more wide and<br />
over a mile long. Its walls have been<br />
carved by slaves over centuries, so that<br />
everywhere <strong>the</strong> eye rests a grinning<br />
demon face, feeding spider, gibbering<br />
spirits, or scenes <strong>of</strong> disgusting practices or<br />
web-covered landscapes will sicken <strong>the</strong><br />
viewer (Will DC 16 to avoid becoming<br />
sickened for 10-30 minutes, unless <strong>the</strong><br />
motives are only briefly glanced at). Skulls<br />
and orgy scenes are <strong>the</strong> typical motifs<br />
used to border major reliefs. <strong>The</strong> sculpturing<br />
becomes more detailed, more disgusting,<br />
more horrible as <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
passage nears.<br />
<strong>The</strong> party sees a squat building <strong>of</strong> yellowish<br />
rock (60 feet by 100 feet by 30 feet)<br />
that completely blocks <strong>the</strong> passageway.<br />
<strong>The</strong> trail leads directly to <strong>the</strong> ugly structure,<br />
It too is ornately sculpted in demoniac<br />
bas-relief, for <strong>the</strong> building is <strong>the</strong> Lesser<br />
Temple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Spider</strong>-<strong>God</strong>. Its open interior<br />
is pillared, and has a large sacrificial altar<br />
and two flanking frames which resemble
