Case study 5 5<br />

A training course for 17 women from Dublin was evaluated. They used the <strong>art</strong>s for<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y action, social change and personal development, and found a number<br />

of individual, group and commun<strong>it</strong>y benef<strong>it</strong>s. The women developed new skills and,<br />

importantly, the abil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> adapt these <strong>to</strong> group and commun<strong>it</strong>y s<strong>it</strong>uations. The<br />

benef<strong>it</strong>s they found included:<br />

Individual benef<strong>it</strong>s<br />

• strengthened and evaluated their own value, skills and creativ<strong>it</strong>y<br />

• increased <strong>art</strong>istic, organisational and communication skills<br />

Group benef<strong>it</strong>s<br />

• increased awareness of how collective, creative action can achieve change<br />

• increased awareness of commun<strong>it</strong>y issues and their abil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> respond <strong>to</strong><br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y needs using <strong>art</strong>s skills<br />

• increased involvement in commun<strong>it</strong>y activ<strong>it</strong>ies<br />

Commun<strong>it</strong>y benef<strong>it</strong>s<br />

• increased volume and qual<strong>it</strong>y of commun<strong>it</strong>y action<br />

• increased networking <strong>w<strong>it</strong>h</strong>in commun<strong>it</strong>ies<br />

• more local control<br />

• increased local ident<strong>it</strong>y and cohesion<br />

• sharing <strong>art</strong>s skills through the wider commun<strong>it</strong>y<br />
