Broshears, a gay Pentecostal Evangelist preacher, came out of the Vanguard youth group<br />

(though he was older than most members) <strong>and</strong> later founded the Lavender Panthers, which<br />

advocated retaliation in kind for attacks on gay people. He ran as the Peace <strong>and</strong> Freedom<br />

Party c<strong>and</strong>idate for congress in 1974.<br />
