Justin Spring claims that "J.A. Nocross" was the pseudonym for Benjamin Musser, giving
him credit as the actual author and publisher, although Jay A. Gertzman argues that
Nocross was a pseudonym for Samuel Roth. Musser was Samuel M. Steward's mentor,
providing the financial backing for Steward's first self-published book, "Pan and the firebird."
Musser, himself a minor poet and closeted homosexual published two small
magazines; "Contemporary Verse" and "JAPM". The October 1929 issue of CV contains an
early poem by Steward, whom Musser introduced to a wide range of poets during romantic
visits to his beach house in Margate. (Justin Spring, pp. 20-22).
