ProjECt DESCriPtion
The Orland Tract property is a 946-acre natural area that
is owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
A group of dedicated restoration volunteers has performed
brush clearing within some of the degraded areas; however,
the majority of restoration work remains to be completed.
This project will restore 300 acres of savanna and prairie
shrub land using selective removal of invasive woody species
and native plant installation.
Immediate short-term ecological effects include elimination
of invasive species and their seed sources and the restoration
of native species, particularly a globally rare plant community.
Long-term ecological effects include improved habitats
hosting more bird species dependent on savanna and prairie
shrub land. Recent studies have shown a steep decline in these
species due to habitat limitations. Long-term socioeconomic
benefits would result from the much larger, healthy, and stable
ecosystems by providing enjoyment to the recreational users
who visit these nature preserves.

FY2010 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) funds
will be used to complete the feasibility plan and design,
execute the project partnership agreement, and award the
construction contract. Continued GLRI funding would be
used to fund construction management, and supervision and
administration of the project.
