Companion Species with <strong>Brassica</strong>s 3.3 Chicory forage system Performance Sheep grazing Chicory is often used as a special-purpose, lamb-finishing crop. Trial work shows that lambs grew 61 to 79% faster than on perennial ryegrass (Table 11), and higher numbers can be carried. Faecal egg counts are reduced in lambs grazing chicory compared with perennial ryegrass (Scales et al. 1995). Chicory also carries lower spore levels for facial eczema and zearalenone. Table 11. Grouse has rapid establishment and erect growth, making it the ideal chicory to use in brassica-herb blends and with short-term ryegrass varieties. As it responds strongly in the cooler months to moisture, Grouse is ideal in areas where winter/spring moisture/irrigation occurs. Dairy cow grazing Cows can produce up to 90% more milk when fed on chicory relative to perennial ryegrass (Figure 6). Dairy cow milk production responses from chicory are similar to those from turnips, improving milksolids production when supplementing pasture over the summer and/or autumn periods (Waugh et al. 1998).
