Message from
our host
Daphne Schild
For the tenth year, I am delighted to be hosting the
Anne Frank Trust Holocaust Memorial Day Lunch.
I continue to support this lunch in memory of my
beloved husband Rolf Schild OBE, who hosted the
first ever Holocaust Memorial Day Lunch in 2003,
shortly before he passed away. It is with great
honour that I remain involved with this amazing
charity that meant so much to him.
Rolf escaped from Nazi Germany to England as a child
in May 1939. His parents were unable to flee and both
suffered and died in Nazi concentration camps along
with other members of his family. Despite this horrific
beginning, Rolf went on to succeed and contribute to
the UK in the areas of engineering and medicine.
He didn’t let his tragic beginning define his life story.
The aim of the Anne Frank Trust to challenge
prejudice and racial hatred resonates with Rolf’s
story. The important work of the Trust looks to a
future where people shall not be judged by their race
or religion and where people will understand the
positive difference that an individual can make.
I wish the Anne Frank Trust every success in its work.
Daphne Schild
How wonderful it is that nobody
need wait a single moment before
starting to improve the world.
From the
Chairman of the
Anne Frank Trust UK
It’s a year since I had the honour of being
appointed Chairman of the Anne Frank Trust. It is
an organisation that I have been involved with for 11
years, and is a huge opportunity for me to work in an
area that I feel so passionately about.
The outlook for our country rests with the next generation, how
they view each other and themselves in society. I want that future
generation to be able to succeed where past generations have not.
They need to understand not only the negative impact of prejudice
but also the huge personal benefits of taking responsibility, having
hope and courage and the positive difference these can make.
The Anne Frank Trust is a driving force, educating young people
in some of the most deprived and divided communities in the UK.
Our aim is to eradicate prejudice and discrimination, providing
young people with the knowledge and skills to build a firm
foundation for their lives ahead.
Unfortunately, the need for the Trust’s work is ever present. The Crown
Prosecution Service reports that in the last 12 months, the number of
racist and religiously aggravated crimes accounted for 80% of the
total of hate crimes prosecuted.
With your generosity the Trust can continue to develop and
improve its education programmes, working in new areas
and reaching even more young people. All the thinking and
talking in the world, is meaningless without action. By being
here today and supporting our work you are taking action.
I would like to thank you and assure you that we will continue
to strive to create the sort of society we would all be proud of.
Daniel Mendoza
No one has ever become
poor by giving.
From the
Executive Director
of the Anne Frank
Trust UK
We are a charity with a big ambition - to help create
Anne’s dream of a world where all our children will be
safe from prejudice and hatred.
In the twelve months since our last lunch we have worked with
24,000 young people in their schools and academies, 2,500 people
in prisons and secure units, trained 192 Anne Frank Ambassadors
and 12,000 people have visited one of our public exhibitions.
We have always been regarded as a charity that punches well
above its weight in terms of its reach and impact.
This year we will be marking the 21st century “turning teenager”
by launching Anne Frank’s Thirteen in 13 online diary writing
campaign for thirteen year olds. Thirteen is a significant time
of transition from childhood into adolescence and our aim is to
proliferate Anne Frank’s message of responsibility for others
amongst the maximum number of young teenagers.
We also have a new look website, encouraging visitors along
fast pathways to action, whether they are teachers looking for
educational support, or young people wanting to learn how they
can make a difference.
Anne Frank dreamt of making a difference. The charity
set up in her name is giving life-changing and
character building educational experiences to
thousands of young people each year. Thank
you for your part in this.
The Anne Frank Trust
Education Programme
Who we are
In 1990 family and friends of Otto Frank set up
the Anne Frank Trust to fulfil his wish to see an
educational charity in the UK in his daughter’s name.
The charity draws on the power of Anne Frank’s life
and diary to challenge prejudice, encouraging
young people to embrace positive attitudes and
respect for others.
13 | Holocaust Memorial Day | Annual Lunch | The Anne Frank Trust
Where we work
Our teams deliver education and exhibition
programmes in schools, criminal justice institutions
and in local communities. Working across six regions
of the UK, we target areas of multiple deprivation with
high community tensions.
What we do
In schools
School children visit our Anne Frank exhibition
and participate in workshops exploring issues such
as identity and diversity. Small groups of pupils are
trained as exhibition guides, who take their peers, school
teachers and visitors around the exhibition. The end of the
project is marked by a closing ceremony at which the school
hears a Holocaust survivor talk about their experiences.
Guides then have the opportunity to become Anne Frank
Ambassadors. The Ambassadors Programme creates even more
engaged, educated, pro-active young people whose learning and
development is deepened through guiding at our flagship public
exhibitions or running workshops on prejudice in schools.
In prisons
Our programme combines an exhibition and talk by a Holocaust survivor with
workshops. In each prison that we work, around 10 participants are trained as guides,
showing other prisoners and staff around the exhibition. For many of these guides, this
is the first time they will have taken on the role of public speaker or informal educator.
In communities
We all live with the objective of
being happy; our lives are all
different and yet the same.
– Anne Frank
Our flagship Anne Frank and You travelling exhibition builds upon our work in local schools,
taking these messages to the rest of the community in which we are working. These community
activities teach about Anne Frank’s life and diary and their relevance to local and social issues today.
Why our work is needed
Our work educates both young and old about the
damage and suffering caused by prejudice and hatred.
We all have a part to play in taking a stand against it.
The impact of our work is significant and far reaching,
but unfortunately the need for it does not diminish:
43,748 hate crimes
were recorded in 2011/2012
47% of Britons
see Muslims as a threat
82% of these were race hate crimes
and 4% religious hate crimes
Being an
Anne Frank
Ambassador
Uzma Zahid talks to us about how the Anne Frank
Trust changed her life.
How did you learn about Anne Frank?
As a child I knew the name, but I didn’t know anything about
her story.
When I was 13, I was nominated by my teacher, along with three
other kids, to take part in a cross-community project in Bradford run
by the Anne Frank Trust. We saw it as a way to get out of class. But
that’s when I was introduced to the story of Anne Frank.
How did this inspire you?
It wasn’t just a lesson. We were being trained to teach others what we were
learning, so I really needed to listen and understand what was being said. In
a few weeks I was to be one of the guides at the Anne Frank and You Exhibition in
Bradford. This responsibility hit home. We all worked hard, learnt facts, prepared
and subsequently became Anne Frank Ambassadors.
What did it mean to you to be an Ambassador?
I was very proud of the knowledge and expertise I was able to pass on to visitors of the
exhibition. I have continued to be involved with the Anne Frank Trust and last year helped to
pass on the baton to the next generation of Bradford Ambassadors.
What impact has this had?
This opportunity changed my life. I lived a very insular and
segregated life in Bradford where I was part of the majority of
South Asians in my school. It began to feel wrong to be amongst
just one culture. I’ve met so many amazing people through
this, it has encouraged me to look outwardly and embrace new
opportunities. My work as an Ambassador encouraged me to learn
more and led me to study History and Psychology at A’level and
then at University.
Why do you feel it’s important to continue to tell
Anne’s story?
I know that some people don’t understand why a
Muslim is telling the story of a Jew. But to me
Anne Frank was a girl whose terrible story needs
to be told as a lesson to everyone. I want people
to stop focusing on negative stereotypes, the
labels that society has assigned - just focus
on the person.
Janine Webber
Janine was born in Lvov, Poland in 1932. All of her immediate
family died in separate, horrifying circumstances during the
Holocaust, leaving Janine traumatised, alone and unsure of her
identity. After remaining in hiding for a year, where she only
had enough room to sit or lie, Janine lost the use of her legs.
She was subsequently sent to a convent where she understood
that in order to survive she would need to hide her Jewish
identity. Janine continues to tell her inspirational story of
survival to school children.
Zlata Filipovic
As a child, Zlata was caught up in the Bosnian war of the early
1990s. Zlata became known for her diary which she started
writing aged 11. What started out as an every day account of
a young girl in Sarajevo, changed when the war spread. Zlata
wrote of her fear during bombing, hiding in a cellar, the gradual
disintegration of life in a city without food, electricity or water
and worst of all, the death of her best friend in a bomb attack.
News agencies and media outlets labelled her the “Anne Frank
of Sarajevo” although unlike Anne Frank, Zlata and her family
survived the war and were evacuated to Paris in 1993. Zlata
has spoken extensively at schools and universities around the
world about her experiences and has collaborated with many
organisations including the Anne Frank House.
Grace Idowu
Grace’s son David was just 14 years old when he was murdered in
June 2008. He was viciously stabbed by 16 year old Elijah Dayoni,
while playing football in a park close to his home in Southwark,
south London. A few days after he was stabbed, David had been
due to speak at a public debating competition against knife and
gun culture. Since his death, Grace has visited schools, prisons
and young offenders’ institutions to raise awareness of the
consequences of violent crime and hostility. Grace has said “we
will never recover from the loss and from witnessing the pain our
son endured”.
Guest performer
Natasha Marsh
World renowned
operatic soprano
Natasha Marsh graduated
at 21 with a first in music
and drama, from Birmingham
University, and won a coveted
scholarship to the Royal College
of Music. With many critically
acclaimed performances under her
belt, and a highly respected soprano
within the opera world, Natasha wanted to
expand on her experiences and in Summer
2006 she recorded her debut album ‘Amour’,
which hit the top of the Classical Chart. This
cemented Natasha as one of the most exciting classically trained singers that
the UK has celebrated for over a decade.
Natasha tours the UK and Europe extensively. She glides seamlessly from recording
artist to enchanting opera goers around the world.
Guest speaker Michael Gove
Michael Gove was born in Edinburgh in 1967. He was educated
at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen and Oxford University.
He enjoyed a fifteen year career in journalism, mainly at The Times
newspaper, where he was Assistant Editor.
Michael was first elected as Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath
in May 2005. He served as Shadow Minister for Housing & Planning
and in 2007 became Shadow Secretary of State for Children,
Schools & Families. Following the General
Election in May 2010, he was appointed
Secretary of State for Education.
He is married to Sarah Vine, a
journalist at The Times, and they
have two children.
Fighting
prejudice and
achieving ambitions
By Ade Adepitan MBE
A legend of wheelchair basketball, Ade Adepitan
achieved a lifetime ambition when he won a bronze
medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens.
Ade has since transferred that success to the TV screen
and was the face of Channel 4’s 2012 Paralympics coverage.
Ade writes especially for us about his experiences at school,
the prejudice he encountered and the need for education to
reduce prejudice.
Being involved in the Paralympics in London this summer was
amazing and so exciting for me. It felt like a culmination of everything
that I had been working towards.
As someone who has always been sports mad, it was such a thrill to see the
likes of Jonnie Peacock achieve what many able bodied people could not. They
have now achieved hero status. But when I was a child there were only able-bodied
heroes for me to look up to. This summer’s Paralympics has changed that.
I am often asked what it was like to come to East London in the late 70s from Nigeria.
My parents moved to London to give me the opportunities that they knew would not be
available to me in Nigeria. Polio at 15 months had robbed me of the use of my legs and
Nigeria was not equipped for people with disabilities.
My first awareness of being different was when I started at my local school in Upton
Park. At the time there were very few black or Asian kids at school and I was the only
disabled child.
On my first day I looked a sight. My mother’s extrovert style had led her to dress
me in a pink-checked suit and bow tie. With my calipers. It certainly took my mind
off my physical disability and turned it to my fashion disability.
I remember wanting to join the other kids in a game of football, but I was
completely ignored. I nagged so much that eventually I was put in goal. The
turning point came when I saved a shot from one of the best footballers in the
school and I became a hero. Sport opened doors for me. People accepted me
because I was a good athlete and I stood up for myself and deflected their
cruelty with jokes.
Prejudice comes from ignorance and fear of the unknown. Initially people
made assumptions about me because of the way I looked. If we can give
children exposure to different cultures and ways of life then it will open
their minds. The Paralympics achieved this by providing a window
into other people’s lives.
The Anne Frank Trust’s focus on young people is vital as they are our
decision makers of the future. I want these children to believe in
themselves, that no matter where they are from, with determination
they can achieve anything.
is truly proud to support
the work of
the Anne Frank Trust UK
My relationship
with the
Anne Frank Trust
by Doreen Lawrence OBE
It is 20 years since Stephen Lawrence, Doreen’s
18-year-old son, was stabbed to death in a racial
attack in southeast London. Since then Doreen has
fought tirelessly for justice.
Doreen writes for us about her relationship with
the Anne Frank Trust.
I first encountered the Anne Frank Trust in 1996 when they were
preparing a brand new travelling exhibition called A History for Today.
Gillian approached me about creating a section on Stephen’s life to show
young people that murderous racism still existed in 1990s London. It was
the days before photos could be scanned and emailed, and I decided to loan
several of our precious photos of Stephen’s childhood, as well as some of his
possessions, so they could create the panels.
The exhibition was launched at Southwark Cathedral in January 1997
and the launch event was my first meeting with Tony Blair while he was
the opposition leader. It was later that same year that Tony Blair became
Prime Minister and the then Home Secretary Jack Straw agreed to set up
the Inquiry into Stephen’s murder. The Inquiry was to look into matters
arising from the death of Stephen and lessons to be learned.
I recall being invited to open the Anne Frank exhibition at Durham
Cathedral in 2000 and seeing again the panel about Stephen.
One of the photos was taken at his school when he had just
lost his milk teeth and his cheeky boyish grin revealed a
wide toothless gap. I remembered saying to him about
not smiling, showing his gap, this resulted in the photo
people see today.
Stephen would be 38 now, possibly even with his own
children. Twenty years after his brutal murder, I am
pleased that Stephen’s story is still included in the
Anne Frank exhibitions and is seen by thousands of
young people each year.
Like many of you at this event today, I wish
the Anne Frank Trust success for many years
to come as they continue their remarkable
educational work.
continue its vital work.
£500
sponsors a combination of all our projects
in an area of high community tension and
social deprivation for three months, engaging
with over 5,000 young people and adults
pays for our ground breaking Anne Frank
Ambassadors programme in which we work with 100
young people for one year creating outstanding peer
educators who take our message to local schools
I don’t want to have lived in vain
like most people. I want to be
useful or bring enjoyment to all
people, even those I’ve never met.
I want to go on living even after
my death!
human rights and stereotyping
Legacies
A legacy can be for a specific sum of money, a specific item, or a share of the
residue of an estate. You can make a change or addition to your Will at any time.
Gifts in Wills can be any size, from under £100 to over a million. Legacies help us plan
for our long term future and we are grateful to be informed of these special pledges.
Celebrations
A gift to the Anne Frank Trust is a great way to recognise a special occasion whilst
joining with us in helping people to challenge all forms of prejudice and hatred.
We can provide you with donation cards for you to send out to friends and family
and regular updates on how much your appeal has raised.
Remembering someone special
Traditionally flowers have been used as tributes to someone special, however more and more
people are choosing to remember a friend or relative by setting up a memorial fund in their name.
It’s a great way to honour a loved one, whilst contributing to a fantastic cause.
To support the Trust in any of the ways mentioned here, please contact Sara Pollins
on 020 7284 5858 who will be happy to help.
The Anne Frank Trust and the Trois Etapes: 26 – 29 July 2013
The Trois Etapes is the ultimate competitive pro-am cycling experience. The event is
designed to give riders the chance to experience team cycling under race conditions,
with the full support that a pro would have in a Grand Tour. The event aims to incentivise
tactical team riding. Each team of 8 riders (7 amateurs and 1 pro) has its own team car
and Directeur Sportif.
The 2013 edition of the Trois Etapes will see 14 teams compete over four days over a flat
Prologue and three mountain stages whilst raising crucial funds for charities worldwide.
The event will be covered by Channel 4 and Eurosport Television.
To apply to join the Anne Frank Trust Trois Etapes team you must be able to raise £10k,
either through sponsorship and/or corporate match funding, as well as be ready for this
immense physical challenge!
