Chairman’s Message
Singapore is well-known for our cleanliness and as a garden city. Our town
planners have done really well to blend greenery into our concrete jungle.
In Moulmein-Kallang GRC and Whampoa SMC, I am heartened to see residents
playing your part in keeping our estates clean and green.
On November 11, many of you witnessed this year’s Tree Planting Day at the grass
patch in front of Block 9 Boon Keng Road (see page 6). This is a tradition that we
have been practising since 1971 as part of the drive to make Singapore a tropical
garden city.
Our other “green” effort involves the replacing of conventional fluorescent lights
with light emitting diode (LED) luminaries which are just as bright but consume
60 per cent less energy. More than 180 HDB residential blocks have had their lights
replaced.
Besides greening, let’s continue to keep our estates clean and litter-free. High-rise
litter can kill and indiscriminate throwing of rubbish can cause inconvenience and
create hygiene issues in your environment.
With all of us chipping in, I am sure that our estates will be a place where you are
proud to call home and delighted to come home to.
Happy holidays and wishing you a successful 2013!
Yours sincerely,
Denise Phua, Chairman
Project EARTH (Every Act of Recycling Trash
Helps) is a recycling project organised by NEA
Central Regional Office and Central Singapore
CDC, and supported by DELL Singapore and
public waste collectors such as 800 Super Waste
Management, Veolia-Environmental Services
Singapore and SembWaste.
The first phase, namely the 10,000-Tonnes Project
EARTH Challenge, was introduced in 2009,
followed by Project EARTH E-recycling and 10%
Total Project EARTH Challenge in 2010 and 2011
respectively.
Since its launch in 2009, Project EARTH has
reached out to 26 schools, 15 corporate partners
and all 23 constituencies in Central Singapore
District, contributing almost 30, 000 tonnes of
recyclables.
You can do your part by:
• Dropping recyclables in Neighbourhood
Recycling Bins.
• Bagging recyclables and leaving them outside
your home before 8.30am on collection dates.
• Bringing down recyclables to Project EARTH
recycling drives organised by our Grassroots
• Papers
• Plastics
• Metal tins and cans
• Glass containers
• Old clothing
• Electronics such as computers
tipS to HElp you SavE tHE EartH and MonEy
1 Get a reusable bag: Plastic bags take many years to decompose and break
down. This generates large amounts of garbage over time
2 Cut your shower time: You can save nine litres of water every minute
3 Wash your vegetables and dishes in a filled tank instead of under a running
tap: You can save up to 14 litres of water
4 Set your air-conditioner at 25°C: Save about $25 a year or more with every
degree you raise
5 Boil water only when needed: If you require hot water throughout the day,
use a thermo-flask to keep it hot. An electric air-pot uses energy
continuously and can cost about $25 a month in electricity
What a esidents can now enjoy brighter, more
Refficient lights. More than 180 HDB
residential blocks in Moulmein- Kallang
GRC had their lights replaced with light
emitting diode (LED) luminaries in August.
These were installed along HDB corridors,
stairways and void decks.
LED luminaries are as bright as, use 60 per
cent less energy and generate less heat
than conventional fluorescent lights.
Better yet, a LED light lasts for 12 years
while a fluorescent light lasts for just two
years. Over the years, electricity tariffs have
risen substantially. This initiative not only
helps the Town Council cut down expenses,
but also reduce carbon emission.
Tree Planting Day
His maneuvering of the
just the crowd gathered for Tree
of our MPs interested. Juggler
Jonathan Goh made the balancing
How to try it out and Minister Lui
Tuck Yew to give him a hand.
Jonathan, a member of Circus Arts
of Kallang CC, has been learning the
ropes of the trick since he was 10. “I
was enthralled by jugglers when I
was young and wanted to learn the
Making a difference 学生义工提供社区辅导与家教服务
through mentoring and tutoring By Grace Ong
The tutoring and mentorship programme is one of the four branches under Moulmein’s
Active Volunteerism initiative, the brainchild of our MP and grassroots leaders.
These children are brought to our attention when
they visit our MP at Meet-the-People sessions. We
will visit them and assess the kind of help they require,
such as financial aid or tuition for primary school kids
if they need but cannot afford tuition.
We will then try to connect them to self-help
associations such as CDAC, Mendaki or SINDA for
more affordable tuition. However, if the families are in
need of dire help, we will try to get volunteers to tutor
and mentor the children at Pek Kio Community Centre
or at their homes.
These volunteers are like mentors to the children as
we are looking at more than just academic results. We
08 TouchPoint
want to be a friend and confidant to them. We want
to help them so that they can help their family.
This year, we started partnering students from
National Junior College to mentor Primary 5
students of Balestier Hill Primary School. This is to
encourage partnership and community service
among students in Moulmein constituency.
Since we started this initiative a year ago, the
number of families coming for help has increased
and we need a bigger pool of committed and
passionate volunteers. Those interested can visit us
at Pek Kio CC, call 62990565 or email pekkioyec@
Cold crab, braised duck, fish with bean sauce,
The restaurant was started by 56-year-old Chef Ng
Having picked up cooking skills from his parents as a
teenager, he and his wife Ng Chew Lian took over the
and Whampoa West in 2009.
“We had to move from Robertson Quay because the
