<strong>The</strong> Strength <strong>of</strong><br />

St<strong>and</strong>ards in<br />

T<strong>The</strong>re is no doubt our lives revolve around st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

<strong>The</strong> clothes <strong>and</strong> shoes we wear, the cars we drive, the<br />

homes we live in, the <strong>of</strong>fices where we work — these all<br />

meet specific, proven acceptable st<strong>and</strong>ards. Applying<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards provides safe, reliable, <strong>and</strong> excellent products<br />

<strong>and</strong> services, which in turn improve our lives.<br />

In today’s global trade environment, st<strong>and</strong>ards must meet<br />

both national <strong>and</strong> international objectives to promote <strong>and</strong><br />

advance global economies. <strong>The</strong>refore, to ensure relevant<br />

criteria meet global objectives, we need to underst<strong>and</strong><br />

how st<strong>and</strong>ards are developed <strong>and</strong> how they can be used<br />

effectively.<br />

Developing st<strong>and</strong>ards begins with a common vision <strong>of</strong><br />

need. Because the U.S. <strong>and</strong> many other nations are safetyconscious<br />

<strong>and</strong> market-driven, visions stem from both<br />

public <strong>and</strong> private sectors — from alliances <strong>and</strong> processes<br />

within government, industry, consumer organizations, <strong>and</strong><br />

trade, pr<strong>of</strong>essional, <strong>and</strong> academic associations. In the U.S.,<br />

public <strong>and</strong> private sectors share common visions to meet<br />

the needs <strong>of</strong> their stakeholders by voluntarily contributing<br />

their intellectual <strong>and</strong> technical knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience<br />

to develop consensus-based st<strong>and</strong>ards. Major principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> consensus include openness (anyone may participate),<br />

balance (no one interest dominates), <strong>and</strong> due process (all<br />

views are considered <strong>and</strong> appeals are possible). <strong>The</strong>se
