31. Lay<strong>in</strong>g Blockade M<strong>in</strong>es with a Launch.-In case a cruis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ship is required to lay a number of blockade m<strong>in</strong>es with<br />

its own resources, there are several methods which may be adopted.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>es, with their anchors, batteries <strong>and</strong> safety breaks, may<br />

be placed <strong>in</strong> a ship's launch at the ends of the thwarts as shown<br />

<strong>in</strong> the sketch, each be<strong>in</strong>g ready to slip at short notice. A steam<br />

cutter may then take the launch <strong>in</strong> tow.<br />

Suppose the m<strong>in</strong>es are to be laid <strong>in</strong> a l<strong>in</strong>e, AI, A 2 , from west to<br />

Arriv<strong>in</strong>g at AI' the first m<strong>in</strong>e, MI' with its anchor, is slipped, <strong>and</strong> ..<br />

The helm is then put hard over <strong>and</strong> the tow returns to the E <strong>and</strong><br />

W l<strong>in</strong>e where M2 is dropped, <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to steer a zigzag<br />

course until all the m<strong>in</strong>es are laid.<br />

32. Lay<strong>in</strong>g Blockade M<strong>in</strong>es with Several Boats <strong>in</strong> Tow.­<br />

Another method, which would be preferable under some circumstances,<br />

is to place each m<strong>in</strong>e with its battery <strong>and</strong> safety break<br />

<strong>in</strong> a <strong>separate</strong> boat, the m<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> its anchor slung over the stern<br />

ready for slipp<strong>in</strong>g, arid the crew seated on the thwarts ready to get
