As a corollary to the rule that salient angles should occupy the<br />

higher po<strong>in</strong>ts of ground, re-enter<strong>in</strong>g angles wili necessarily occupy<br />

the lower po<strong>in</strong>ts. The open<strong>in</strong>gs or communications through<br />

works, which may be necessary, are fGrmed near the re-enter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

angles.<br />

Flanks should never be less than 12 yards long, otherwise the<br />

ditch will not be seen, much of this space be<strong>in</strong>g occupied by the<br />

s10pes of the portion which is flanked. When it is advisable to<br />

flank with artillery; not less than three guns should be used.<br />
