General Shamanov, flew <strong>in</strong> to <strong>in</strong>spect<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the regiment. Shamanov<br />

came to headquarters, put his foot on the<br />

first step and opened the door. A body<br />

fell out onto him, drunk as a skunk -<br />

Chuk.<br />

Now Chuk still doesn’t know who<br />

shot at him, but I do. It was night and the<br />

<strong>in</strong>to their eyes, so one of them took his<br />

silenced rifle, went to the w<strong>in</strong>dow and<br />

aimed at the light. I was stand<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow smok<strong>in</strong>g and saw Chuk walk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

across the square... Thank God they<br />

were both drunk: one missed and the<br />

other didn’t notice. The bullet hit the
