Selecting an Engine Driven Welder. Ask yourself these questions:
1. Occasional welding or frequent use?
Outback ® welders produce enough amperage for thin materials. Step up to
Ranger ® models for a wider range of materials and heavy commercial use.
2. Are you most comfortable with one arc welding process?
Do you require the ability to handle multiple processes?
Stick, TIG, wire welding? If you know you only require stick welding, you
can save on purchase costs. However, if you need TIG and wire welding
flexibility, look to our multi-process Ranger ® models.
3. What type of material will be welded?
Steel? Stainless? Aluminum?
Chopper Technology ® delivers an outstanding DC arc for most steel
and stainless work, and spool gun work on aluminum. If you intend to
TIG weld on aluminum, you’ll need AC welding capability.
4. What is the range of material thickness you plan to tackle?
Generally, you will need up to 300 amps to weld with 3/16 inch (4.8 mm)
diameter stick electrode or 5/64 inch (2.0 mm) self-shielded wire. Up to 150
amps is needed to weld with 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) stick electrode.
5. Do you have specific fuel requirements?
Gasoline? Diesel? LPG?
Gasoline is most common, but some buyers prefer diesel to match the fuel
in their trucks. Some environments require LPG when gasoline or diesel
emissions are not acceptable.
6. How much AC generator power do you need?
Check the required starting watts of the tools you plan to use. Outback ®
models generate approximately 4,000 to 5,000 watts while Ranger ®
models generate about twice as much AC power.
