With snow covering our nation’s capital and Puxatawney
Phil predicting 6 more weeks of winter, it is hard to imagine
spring and green grass right around the corner. With that
comes the National Belted Galloway Sale held for the 20 th
consecutive year in Fryeburg, Maine. Many thanks to Brud
McCabe (VT) for leading this effort for so many years and to
Scott and Chris Adams (ME) for taking over as the new leaders
this year. It sounds like some outstanding cattle have been
consigned to the sale and the ever popular youth show should
put this event on everyone’s calendar for the weekend of
April 24.
Further indication that our breed is making great headway
across our nation, is the work that a dedicated group of breeders
are undertaking to create the Texas Belted Galloway Association.
There has been a dramatic increase of Beltie breeders
in Texas, with currently over 50 herds registering cattle.
Their desire to support each other and promote our breed is an
exciting sign!Anyone interested in learning more about this
Texas group can call George Adams (TX) of Aavalon Farm at
(903) 549-2036.
Within this newsletter you will find a list of committees
established to work with our National Council, along with the
Chair of each of those committees and their contact information.
Vic Eggleston (WI), as our Executive Director, is available
to talk about particular needs or questions you might
have. If you would prefer to talk directly to the Chair of one
of our committees please feel free to do so!
We wish to congratulate the 2009 Lifetime Silver and Gold
Award Winners while also introducing the Platinum Level. At
the Platinum level we are recognizing those animals, both
male and female, who have accumulated over 100 Lifetime
Points. The Lifetime Award system recognizes many sires
and dams who were never shown, but consistently produced
progeny that showed well.
Finally, as we all get ready to transition from winter to
spring, we want to recognize the passing of Gene Drew of
Driftwood Plantation in South Carolina. While Sue has been
the face of the cattle for Driftwood, those of us who were so
fortunate to have known Gene, know that his passion for the
land, the wildlife and all that Driftwood represented was surpassed
only by the warm welcome he offered when we visited.
Gene will be missed by us all but never forgotten. Our
thoughts, prayers and best wishes to Sue and all the Driftwood
family.

Thomas Eugene Drew, III, 70, died peacefully on Friday,
February 5, 2010 at Driftwood in Awendaw, South Carolina.
He was born in Walterboro, SC, attended Clemson
University and served in the United States Navy.
Gene with his wife of 46 years, Sue Drew, had raised
commercial Herefords since 1964. They bought their first
Belted Galloway bull at the Deep South Sale in the early
1990’s and spent the next decade buying foundation Belties
converting their herd to the 200+ Belted Galloways presently
at Driftwood Plantation. Gene also pursued preservation of
wildlife and conservation of the pristine SC Lowcountry
environment that was his lifelong home.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held outside at
Driftwood on April 17, 2010 at 11 am. Dress casually and for
the weather. Sue would like everyone to join her for
refreshments and a simple buffet lunch following the
memorial service.

Group fund, in care of The Belted Galloway Foundation, Inc.

Canadian Livestock Records Corp. • issuance of certificates, in a format approved by the
Society, and membership cards

The Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) is a
non-profit corporation, established under Canadian federal
legislation, the Animal Pedigree Act, to provide registry services
to incorporated breed associations. The CLRC acts as a
neutral third party between the associations and their members.
CLRC is governed by a Board of Directors composed of
representatives of the breed associations who have been
elected by their colleagues to serve in that capacity. CLRC
provides its services to fifty-three Canadian breed associations,
also providing services on a contract basis to three bovine
associations based in the United States, including the
American Galloway Breeders’ Association.
The various breed associations are responsible for setting
their own rules of eligibility and registry requirements. The
CLRC is responsible for enforcing those rules and procedures,
and for collecting the proper fees.
The CLRC currently has a staff of nine persons under the
direction of Ron Black, General Manager. The staff has many
years of experience and knowledge to offer. Two members of
the CLRC staff will be assigned to our members of the Belted
Galloway Society, Inc.
SERVICES:
The core registry service provided by CLRC is a complete
service consisting of the following basic elements:
• printing and distribution of application forms
• receipt and deposit of all fees
• entry of information from applications into database
• manual and computer checking of data and approval
of applications, ensuring adherence to rules
of eligibility as set down in Society by-laws and to
recognized biological parameters
• recording of DNA test results

• mailing of documents, including all envelopes and
postage
• invoice with completed documents that accounts for
fees received and charged
• contact with breeders to resolve problems
• acquisition of necessary computer hardware and
software and upgrades to same
• scanning of all source documents into database for
future reference
• daily and monthly backup of database, with offsite
storage of backup media
• regular reporting to the Society office, including
several routine reports, as well as any custom reports
that may be required.
In addition to the above services, CLRC also maintains a
section of its website on which it posts a listing of members
and the pedigrees of animals for each association that chooses
to participate. The site is updated frequently from the main
database.
The Belted Galloway Society Inc. signed a contract with
CLRC. The five-year contract will be renewable. Work has
commenced on programming the Society registry. In developing
the programs, the CLRC systems manager uses many
common routines for all the various associations, and customizes
them for our Society while incorporating the particular
rules, regulations and requirements set down by our By-Laws.
Our next step will be to transfer the existing member and animal
data to CLRC.
When the programming and testing has been completed, an
information package will be sent to each Belted Galloway
Society Inc. member to introduce them to CLRC. This will
include forms and information on how to contact CLRC.
It is estimated that implementation will take 3 to 4 months
to complete. We will continue to update the Belted Galloway
Society Inc. membership as the conversion process continues.

Scholarships for 2010. Three $500 scholarships are awarded

The recipients must meet the following criteria:
1. Be a member of the Beltie Youth Group, the Belted
Galloway Society Inc., or a child or grandchild of a BGS member;
2. Be a graduating high school senior, a college student,
or be enrolled in an advanced education program; and
3. Submit the completed application form along with a
written essay explaining why he/she is the best possible candidate
for the scholarship. Added consideration will be given to
applicants enrolled in animal/agriculture related courses, and
those experienced with Belted Galloway cattle. Extracurricular
and out-of-school activities will also be taken into consideration.
Application forms must be submitted to Executive Director,

Spring is now upon us. Calving season will have started for
many, or is just around the corner, bringing with it new and
wonderful beginnings. It is quite an exciting time for all. As
we enjoy the warmer spring weather, let us not forget about
the upcoming National Sale on April 24, 2010. The sale is
held in conjunction with BYG Region 1, hosting one of the
largest youth shows in the Northeast. This youth show is
open to all breeds and offers a jackpot steer show, showmanship,
steer, and heifer classes. Now is an opportune time to
see what the youth have been doing during the winter in
preparation for the first show of the season. Remember supporting
our youth will ensure the future of this breed.
What a great time is had by all breeders that attend,
whether you are meeting and talking with old friends, making
new ones, enjoying the evening social and youth benefit, taking
in the youth show or just unwinding from life’s hectic
pace. Making the trip to Fryeburg, ME for the National Sale
just to view the diverse selection of sale cattle is an experience
like no other. Hope to see you all there.
