Growing up on a dairy farm In Leeds, Mac has always had a passion for farming. Being a self-employed 

carpenter and having a few animals on a small piece of property in Livermore, he decided it would be 

nice to have more land so he could be a “hobby” farmer and raise his own beef. In 1974 Mac and Patty 

decided to sell their ranch home and buy a farmhouse on Route 108 in South Livermore. He achieved 

his dream of finally becoming a “hobby” farmer after completing some much needed renovations to 

the farmhouse. He started out with 

“Topsy”, his Gurnsey milking cow, 

a horse, some rabbits, a few chickens 

and then he added a few cross-breed 

beef animals. 

While attending county fairs with his 

two sons, Randy and Steve, during 

their 4-H years of showing steers, 

Mac decided he would like to try his 

hand at showing cattle. He became 

interested in the Belted Galloway's at 

Fryeburg Fair after Randy caught a 

Beltie/Hereford cross in the 4-H calf 

scramble. Randy was encouraged by 

Merle Prock to catch that particular 

steer. Mac bought his first heifer, 

“Winky”, in the spring of 1978 from 

Aldemere Farms and bought the his 

first bull, “Beaver Dam Stan", in the 

fall from Beaver Dam Farm in New Hampshire. Because of the friendships and camaraderie that he 

came to enjoy at the fairs, he wanted to continue attending after his two sons were through with 4-H. 

Accordingly, he showed his first Beltie in 1981, his youngest son Steve's last year in 4-H. Since he 

didn't have a trailer and one was not readily available at the time, he recalls hauling “Winky”, her 

calf, and Steve's steer to Fryeburg Fair in the back of his pick-up truck. Mac has always named his 

animals by choosing names that begin with the same letter based upon the year in which they were born. 

Beginning in January each year, all animals born that year are named with a name that begins with the 

same letter. After going down through the alphabet once, Mac is now on his second time around. He 

takes great pride in his animals and is particularly interested in studying the blood lines of Belties in 

order to increase the quality of his breeding. 

Mac and Patty have been married for 54 years and have three children, Shelly Hanson of Chelsea, Randy 

of Wayne and Steve of Livermore; four grandchildren, Brent, Kristyn, Mathew, and Jessica; two greatgrandchildren, 

Cassidy and Alex. They are both very hard workers, and in addition to farming, they 

enjoy working outside, going to their camp at Moosehead Lake and growing flowers and vegetables in 

their large garden. Mac also takes pride in being able to harvest firewood from his own property.

Terms and CondiTions of sale 

1. Terms Cash. Each animal to be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer shall settle 

any dispute as to bids. Reserve bids accepted from consignor, if any, will be announced. 

2. Announcements concerning cattle made at the sale ring by owners or auctioneer 

will take precedence over statements in the sale catalog. 

3. Risk. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and neither sale organizers 

nor the Fryeburg Fairgrounds shall assume liability, legal or otherwise, for any 

accidents which may occur. 

4. Tom Carper, auctioneer, acts as agent for the sellers. 

5. Health certificates will be available for cattle to be shipped interstate. 

6. Registration certificates will be transferred to buyers at sellers’ expense. Each buyer 

must give the clerk his proper name and address for making transfers. All animals offered 

are guaranteed to be purebred. 

7. Delivery. Sale organizers will make every attempt to assist buyers in locating transport 

at the lowest possible cost. 

8. Bidding. If you are unable to attend the sale in person you may contact the sale
